The Stadtpark ( Danish Byparken ) in Flensburg is a green area opened in 1903 with old trees in the Westliche Höhe district .

history

In 1897 the preliminary planning for the construction of the city park began by city planner Otto Fielitz . In the same year, the city of Flensburg bought the former Lücke Oevelgönne , a 22,000 m² plot of land that was previously owned by the Nis-und-Sophie-Petersen family foundation and used for leased gardens. In a tender for a park three years later, the design by horticultural engineer Heinrich Nissen, who used English models with his concept, prevailed. In 1900, the Övelgönne gap began to be planted . At the end of the three-year construction period, the city park was ceremonially opened to the public on September 27, 1903 with the unveiling of the Wrangel monument, a work by the sculptor Adolf Brütt (1855–1939).

The main features of the park that have been preserved today are, in addition to the monument, rare plants, park benches , a playground and a drinking fountain, as well as a goldfish or duck pond in the center of the facility, which initially consisted of two ponds with a wooden bridge . The stone caves that were initially part of the park are no longer recognizable today. In addition, there is a seahorse fountain in the city park today .
