The Roman Catholic parish church of Bad Leonfelden in the city of Bad Leonfelden in the Mühlviertel stands at the western end of the main square and is a listed building. The main church of the city, consecrated to the holy apostle Bartholomäus , was first mentioned in a document in 1154 and expanded to its present size from 1875 to 1877.

history

A church in Leonfelden was first mentioned in 1145 as a branch church of Gramastetten . In 1292, a parish was created by separating it from the mother parish in Leonfelden with branch churches in Oberneukirchen and Vorderweissenbach , and in 1400 it was incorporated into Wilhering Abbey. During the Hussite Wars in the first half of the 15th century, the church, which was probably made of wood, as was customary at the time, was burned down.

From an inscription on the north portal with the year 1481 it can be deduced that the late Gothic new stone building was built under Abbot Thomas Dienstl in the second half of the 15th century. The church tower was part of the fortifications of the market and until 1781 carried a cantilever resting on cantilevers. In 1781 the tower was raised and baroque.

Between 1875 and 1877, under Abbot Alois Dorfer, cathedral builder Otto Schirmer enlarged the church by adding heights to the south aisle and erecting a north aisle with a Marian and baptistery. The baroque church furnishings were replaced by a neo-Gothic one, today's high altar was installed and a new west portal was created.

After the fire on April 10, 1892 (Palm Sunday), which destroyed the roof and the tower dome, the roof had to be replaced. In the course of renovations, the sacristy was increased and the tower was partially rebuilt in a neo-Gothic style by Raimund Jeblinger . The interior was renovated in 1938 and the entire church in 1969. In 1980 the church received a new organ and in 1997 a new slate tower roof.

Church interior

High altar

The interior is shaped by the neo-Gothic renovations of the 19th century. The three-aisled nave is around 30 meters long and 20 meters wide. Under the side galleries there are pointed arches , the vaults in the choir rest on round stones. The neo-Gothic Lady Chapel is connected to the aisle and choir by a wide pointed arch opening.

Church exterior

The church consists of exposed stone masonry with neo-Gothic additions. The central nave has a crooked roof, the side aisles have low pent roofs. The high church tower has four zones with neo-Gothic windows and a pyramid-shaped tower roof. On the outer wall are the former tower crosses and a memorial plaque to the first deceased market citizens. The war memorial erected in 1927 and renovated in 1959 stands on the east side of the church.
