The parish church Friedberg stands in the middle of the church square in the municipality Friedberg in the district of Hartberg-Fürstenfeld in Styria . The parish church consecrated to St. James the Elder - incorporated into Vorau Abbey - belongs to the Vorau deanery of the Graz-Seckau diocese . The church and parts of the city and cemetery wall are under monument protection ( list entry ).

history

In the course of a city survey (2018) it was found that the western portal point of the Romanesque foundation building is on the ax cross of the stakeout of the city fortifications. The nave was easted on March 26th, 1193 (Good Friday), the choir was easted on March 28th, 1193 (Easter Sunday); the bend in the axis can be seen with the naked eye with a learned view.

In 1443 the parish was incorporated into Vorau Abbey. Until 1863 the cemetery was located around the church, in that year a new cemetery was opened a little south of the church. In 1968 the Pinggau parish was established and part of it was spun off from the Friedberg parish.

Today's late Gothic church building with a lofty interior was built in the first half of the 15th century. After a fire in 1682, the outside of the church was given a baroque style, with a chapel and oratory annex and a music gallery added to the side of the choir. In 1966 the church was restored inside and in 1972 outside.

architecture

The choir shows flat buttresses on the outside. In front of the western front is the square tower with an articulated onion helmet with the year 1690, the western portal now inside through the tower is a late Gothic shoulder arch portal.

The two-aisled four-bay nave hall has a ribbed vault on three octagonal pillars and capped polygonal wall services. The retracted choir with three narrow yokes and a five-eighth end has a ribbed vault. The late Gothic sacristy extension is in the south of the choir.

The outside of the church contains two Roman stones from the 2nd century AD, one of which depicts a hunting scene. A tombstone mentions 1691.

Furnishing

The furnishings are in an excellent late baroque style. The high altar in the succession of Matthias Steinl executed by Wolfgang Pinter shows the high altar painting Apotheosis Jakobus the Elder with the mentioning Carolus Unterhueber fecit 1733. Two images of saints on the gallery were made around 1700.

The organ is named 1820 and contains a work from 1966.
