The Lüneburg Castle is a city palace of the Welfen in Lüneburg (market square), in the district of Lüneburg in Lower Saxony .

history

The castle is located on the market square of the Hanseatic city of Lüneburg. Duke Georg Wilhelm von Braunschweig-Lüneburg had the castle built from 1695 to 1700 by Johann Caspar Borchmann , including three former patrician houses. The castle is a massive baroque building that is located on the north side of the market square in Lüneburg. The facade facing the market square shows a three-storey, symmetrically designed building with a raised ground floor (above a basement floor) and a magnificent central portal, to which a staircase leads.

The castle served as a widow's residence for his wife Eleonore d'Olbreuse until 1717 . She is the great-grandmother of Frederick the Great . The castle was later used as a barracks and seat of the Lüneburg district court . The building is currently being used by the Lüneburg Regional Court .
