The Stadttheater Kaufbeuren is the municipal theater of Kaufbeuren . The listed building, located on the eastern edge of the old town in the Rosental, offered 263 seats and 10 standing places and was previously used as a salt storage facility.

history

On January 18, 1805, the "Dramatic Lovers' Society" founded by the citizens of Kaufbeur acquired the former municipal tool shed in the Rosental and had it converted into a theater. The early supporters of the house included Johann Georg Heinzelmann , Christoph Friedrich Heinzelmann , Johann Melchior Elch , Johann Christoph Meyer , Johann David Schäfer , Karl Jakob Stecher , Georg Jakob Wagenseil , Christoph Daniel Walch and Johann Jakob Hörmann von und zu Gutenberg . The house was opened on December 26, 1805 with the performance of the play Johanna von Montfaucon by August von Kotzebue .

After the "Dramatic Lovers Society" got into financial difficulties, Christoph Daniel Walch , Christoph Friedrich Heinzelmann and Georg Jakob Wagenseil bought the theater on May 25, 1832. After the death of Heinzelmann and Wagenseil, Walch offered the theater to the city for sale in 1847 but initially failed due to the resistance of the district of Swabia and Neuburg . Only when the basis for a state theater in Swabia was laid in 1862, which was to play on stages in Kempten, Memmingen, Lindau and Kaufbeuren, did the district government agree. The city acquired the house on October 14, 1862 on condition that it be retained as a city theater.

From 1866 to 1868 the theater was renovated and equipped with boxes, galleries and gas lighting. In 1901/02 and 1907 the Schnürboden was renewed, the stage equipment was modernized and emergency exits were installed. In 1924/25 the orchestra pit was expanded, the interior was redesigned, new electrical lighting was installed and central heating was installed.

Stadttheater Kaufbeuren: Foyer with connecting wing to the town hall before the renovation

The last renovation took place in 1970/71 with the expansion of the Kaufbeurer town hall. A connecting tract between the theater and the entrance hall of the town hall and a new staircase were installed. In addition, a foyer with cloakrooms and toilet facilities was added and a theater chandelier made from 20,934 individual parts by the manufacturer Swarovski with a diameter of 150 cm and a weight of 82 kg was installed. The auditorium is otherwise largely as it was in 1866/1868. The U-shaped, rather low room with a flat ceiling has two tiers, the wooden balcony balustrades of which are supported by thin square supports.

From August 2014, the city theater was temporarily closed for renovation work. For 1,200,000 euros, renovation work was carried out to visually upgrade the interior and to modernize the foyer. Now the city theater can also be used as a venue for social events . The reopening was planned for September 2015 and took place on October 2, 2015 with the theater performance Ein Tollhaus .

Stage curtain

BW

Probably the oldest still used stage curtain in Germany can be found in the Stadttheater Kaufbeuren . It dates from 1805 and was painted in resin oil paint by the Munich court theater painter Joseph Hungermüller on three horizontal panels of finely woven canvas. In 1971 the curtain was restored.
