Regensburg suburban railway

Urban rail approach

background

The starting position in Regensburg is extremely difficult. Over 70,000 people commute into the city from the surrounding area every day, mostly by car.

The Danube stretches across Regensburg in a west-east direction.

Many jobs, industrial locations and leisure activities are located south of the Danube in Regensburg. However, the Danube is only crossed by traffic routes in four places in a north-south direction: three road bridges and one railway bridge.

The road crossings also have another disadvantage: One of the crossings is a motorway which, in addition to regional traffic, also has to cope with supra-regional north-south traffic and also has a second bottleneck in the form of the Pfaffenstein tunnel.

Based on the knowledge that in addition to east-west traffic, especially in north-south traffic at rush hours within and around Regensburg, there are massive traffic jams, the roads can no longer accommodate any further traffic and the crossing A 3 motorway has 6 lanes is being expanded and will consequently bring even more traffic in the direction of the A93, the city-surrounding railway between Langquaid and Burglengenfeld was brought into play for Regensburg through the Pro-Städtedreiecksbahn initiative.

Section Laabertalbahn

The Eggmühl – Langquaid line is known as the Laabertal Railway . The association based here, together with the neighboring communities, maintains the track system and carries out historical event and freight traffic. The municipalities of Langquaid and Schierling are actively involved in maintaining the track system and are working on a “city area concept” for a connection to Regensburg without having to change trains.

Section Eggmühl – Regensburg

The track section from Regensburg main station to the Obertraubling junction has reached its capacity limits, and the Airport Express between Regensburg and Munich Airport was already very difficult to accommodate here. A third track is already being planned in the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan and is at an early planning stage. This track is a prerequisite for further traffic between Langquaid and Regensburg.

Section Regensburg – Maxhütte-Haidhof

The route between Regensburg and Maxhütte-Haidhof, as a section of the Regensburg-Hof connection, has not yet been electrified. There are expansion plans for this route with very long implementation periods, and possible electrification is also in the room. Additional capacities are available here for a Regensburg suburban railway.

Section Burglengenfeld – Maxhütte

The Haidhof – Burglengenfeld railway is located between Burglengenfeld and Maxhütte-Haidhof . Passenger traffic on this route has been suspended since 1967, while freight traffic towards the cement works has continued to increase in recent years. The Bavarian Railway Company is currently looking into reactivating passenger transport in the direction of Regensburg. Initial announcements show that there is a very high chance that local rail transport will be restarted.

Extension to a later Regensburg city railway

The concept of the urban suburban railway approach of the citizens' initiative is a direct connection to the city of Regensburg without changing trains, in the first implementation phase as a continuous north-south connection exclusively on the Deutsche Bahn network and in the second phase through partial use of the urban railway lines as a tram-train concept, similar to the Chemnitz Model .

Assessment

The Komobile office received the order in 2019 to examine this approach due to the many requests to continue the Regensburg light rail into the surrounding area. The appraisal office clearly gave the new construction of tram routes to the surrounding area a 'basket'. For the construction of new tram routes to the surrounding area, the surrounding area is too sprawled and there is no corresponding demand for eligibility.

The Bavarian Railway Company is examining the approach of a suburban railway on railway tracks with a later connection on the city railway as part of a major report for the Regensburg area.

Terminology

In the discussion, various partly contradicting concepts are being worked on within the framework of an urban bypass, which is called for by many sides.

Regardless of political affiliation, the approach of the Karlsruhe model ( tram goes to the surrounding area ) is confused with the construction of new tram routes to the surrounding area (Erlangen) as well as the Chemnitz model ( tram- like regional rail vehicles go into the city ).

The Komobile office clearly rejected the “tram routes to the surrounding area” approach. Nevertheless, this concept is repeatedly requested for testing a Regensburg suburban railway:

From the point of view of many district politicians, only the approach of the Chemnitz model is realistic for planning a regional railway in Regensburg without changing trains.
