Regensburg light rail

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Regensburg Stadtbahn is a project to reintroduce rail-based local public transport , after the Regensburg tram operated in Regensburg from 1903 to 1964 .

history

A reintroduction is said to have been considered as early as 1967. The Regensburg public transport company was interested in the new conductorless trams in Freiburg.

Reintroduction was discussed again and again in the 1970s. A study commissioned in 1994 recommended the city of Regensburg to introduce a light rail system, although at that time it was meter gauge again. A study published by the VCD in 1993 also suggested the introduction of a light rail system.

Another study in 2006 confirmed that the use of the tram was clearly too low. However, the study was heavily criticized by the Verkehrsclub Deutschland (VCD). The main point of criticism was the doomed approach of three lines in the reduction concept. Here, the VCD suggested that the north-south line with the greatest support should be examined individually, then it would be eligible. Even if there are no concrete plans to date, the possible routes are already taken into account during construction work, such as the new construction of the Nibelungen Bridge or the deliberate preservation of the former freight tracks in Schwabelweis .

Since the end of November 2006, a proposal for a first expansion stage, the so-called mini-tram, has received support from various sides. This is a north-south route from Wutzlhofen in the north via Konradsiedlung , Nordgaustraße, Danube shopping center , Donaumarkt, Hauptbahnhof / Albertstraße, Friedenstraße and the university to the university clinic . An extension would be possible.

The north-south axis is also prioritized in the interim report on a new investigation, which was presented to the Regensburg city council in September 2008. However, according to the report, Regensburg is already a “very good bus city” and the system change to a light rail system would only be desirable in the long term. An intermediate stage was named: A so-called " BRT " system, which enables buses to have a lane independent of the motorized vehicle . When fully expanded, this could run as a kind of bus line with double articulated buses on these self-sufficient routes. However, this interim solution has not yet been examined for its profitability in the ongoing investigation; this will be the subject of further examination.

According to the Heidelberg traffic planner Robert Wittek-Brix, there would be no eligibility for an autonomous tram system, even with links to the surrounding area. Similar to the model in Zwickau , existing regional train lines with diesel hybrid or battery hybrid vehicles with overhead lines should therefore be routed through the city center instead of around it and without overhead lines in the direction of the courtyard. This would require six kilometers of new line from the northeast of Regensburg to the main train station. Instead of the approximately 300 million euros for a light rail, 60 million euros are to be estimated. Apart from the university and hospital, the essential points of the "service axis" would be connected.

The Austrian planning office Komobile, which also expanded the Gmunden tram into the surrounding area and was commissioned by Regensburg to examine a higher-quality public transport system, gave the " Tram-Train " model a clear rejection in an initial statement . Additional traffic is not possible on the non-electrified routes.

In 2016, the Regensburg architecture professor Walter Weber founded a new "Alliance for high-quality public transport in the Regensburg area" with a total of 19 members. The community of interests calls for a paradigm shift in transport policy, namely “an efficient, environmentally friendly light rail with largely its own route”.

In October 2017, the Komobile published an interim report that recommends the Regensburg Stadtbahn and judges it to be eligible. The construction of the Stadtbahn would now cost 246 million, of which Regensburg would have to bear a share of 19%. Regensburg's SPD wants to implement the Stadtbahn by 2030.

On June 19, 2018, the planning committee of the Regensburg City Council unanimously decided to introduce a new light rail system in Regensburg as soon as possible.

On June 29, 2018, the decision of the planning committee was confirmed by the city council with only one vote against.

On November 5th, Mayor Jürgen Huber, who once negotiated the tram test in the coalition agreement, was awarded the German Railway Customer Association's award by DBV President Gerhard J. Curth in the Berlin House of Representatives for his extraordinary commitment to a new Regensburg tram: "In her laudation Sybille Uken, co-spokeswoman for the Berlin Pro Straßenbahn alliance, praised Jürgen Huber's foresight and consistency. Regensburg is a role model for Berlin when it comes to Berlin's traffic problems. "

Lines

The intended starting concept is two lines from the north to the south of the city:

Both lines are to be operated every 5 minutes during the day, which means a vehicle sequence of 2-3 minutes between Nordgaustraße and Hbf. Accordingly, bus lines, which today mostly run as diameter or radial lines across Bahnhofplatz or Albertstraße, should no longer go into the city, but rather act as feeders to the trams. Appropriate transfer hubs in the north and south are planned.

Bus lines are also to create additional ring and tangent connections compared to today.

A third line is being considered in the reports for further network expansion:
