The Stadtwerke Meiningen GmbH is a 100% subsidiary of the City Meiningen . It was re-established on April 4, 1991 and operates as a regional energy service provider for the district town of Meiningen. The municipal utilities supply the city with electricity , natural gas , drinking water and district heating and operate, among other things, multi-storey car parks and the “Rohrer Stirn” leisure center in Meiningen. They also finance and support clubs and events as sponsors .

Stadtwerke Meiningen is the commercial agent of the municipal sewage disposal system Meiningen (SAM). In 2000 they put a new sewage treatment plant into operation, to which the Ortasteil Walldorf has also been connected since 2005 .

Leisure facilities

Stadtwerke Meiningen operates the “Rohrer Stirn” leisure center in the east of the city with an indoor pool, outdoor pool, sauna, caravan and camping site (four stars), restaurant and event pavilion. Together with the Meiningen swimming club “Wasserfreunde”, the municipal utilities organize the Meiningen 24-hour swimming there every year .

In 1859 the first gas works was built in Meiningen, the city already had functioning street lighting based on gas. In 1890 a municipal waterworks with pumping station was built. In 1913 the city put the new gas works with a direct current system into operation.

In 1922 Meininger Licht- und Kraftwerke GmbH was finally founded , which was renamed Municipal Technical Works in 1936 . Four years later, in 1940, the company was named Stadtwerke Meiningen . After the founding of the GDR in 1949, the municipal utilities were dissolved and their areas were divided into individual state-owned energy combines.

In 1991 the Stadtwerke were re-established as a GmbH. Until 1995 they took over the district heating supply (1992), the water supply (1993), the gas supply, the power supply and the baths "Am Mittleren Rasen" and "Rohrer Stirn" (all 1995) in Meiningen . Also in 1995 the company moved into the new administration building in the Jerusalem district . In 1996 the Stadtwerke had the car park Zentrum Ost built , in 1998 the underground car park Am Mittleren Rasen and the car park Utendorfer Strasse in the Jerusalem district. In 2001 they took over 23 percent of the shares in regional television WerraTV , later renamed “Plus.tv Südwest”. The station was dissolved in October 2007 after bankruptcy.

In 2001 the Stadtwerke opened the newly built indoor swimming pool in the “Rohrer Stirn” leisure center , the Zentrum-West car park and a natural gas filling station (both in 2002), a caravan and camping site (2003), and the renovated and modernized outdoor swimming pool in the “Rohrer Stirn” leisure center (2005 ) and the Am Steingraben car park in the Jerusalem district (2006). From 2006 onwards, the municipal utilities were involved in the renovation of several historic buildings in the city center. In 2007, after the first construction phase, the GAW Institute for Vocational Education and Training of the German Adult Education Center and the municipal gallery ada moved into a former school building . After completion of the second construction phase, the Meininger Theater's Neue Kammerspiele opened there on June 20, 2008 .

In 2008, Stadtwerke Meiningen moved into a new customer center at the main location on Utendorfer Straße. After the completion of the renovation work in the Großer Palais , there has been a health center since 2009. From 2014, the municipal utilities operated the lido and the campsite in Breitungen (Werra), which was given up again at the end of 2015 due to restructuring and specialization in the Meiningen region. In 2017, the Stadtwerke set up another parking lot with a charging station for electric vehicles in Bernhardstraße between the Great Palace and the Meiningen State Theater .
