history

In 1896 the Soltau GmbH gas station was founded. In a contract it was decided that the city of Soltau had to let each of the 126 gas lamps burn for around 900 hours per year. From October 1, 1896, 86 private customers were also connected to the gas supply. By March 1919, the number of customers rose to 1039, so that in the same year a gas tank with a capacity of 2000 was built, which was a symbol of Soltau until it was demolished in 1971. Due to the plans to introduce the electricity supply, Soltau businessmen sold all of their company shares to the city in 1919. In May 1921, the first electricity supply was agreed by means of a contract between the Stade Electricity Association and the City of Soltau's magistrate. The Soltau gas works took over responsibility for electricity matters.

On September 25, 1936, the Gasanstalt Soltau GmbH was dissolved and the assets transferred to the city of Soltau. From then on, the company operated as a municipal company under the name Städtische Betriebswerke . During the Second World War there were frequent supply bottlenecks, so that gas savings and disconnection of the power supplies had to be carried out.

In 1956 a vertical chamber furnace system was built. The supply area and the business areas grew over time. The foundation stone for a central water supply was laid in 1958 with the acquisition of a piece of land on Schüttenbusch . Drinking water was sold for the first time in May 1959, and by 1962 459 households were among its customers. In 1963 the new liquefied gas cracking plant was put into operation, in 1965 the municipal utilities built the waterworks and began expanding the water supply network. After the completion of the waterworks, around 80 percent of households were connected to the central water supply in 1967. On May 28, 1970 the Stadtwerke were converted into a GmbH. In 1971 the company switched to natural gas , and in 1983 a combined heat and power plant for the use of district heating was put into operation.

Soltau thermal baths

In 1971, the Stadtwerke took part in the previously founded Bäder- und Tourismusgesellschaft mbH . Then an indoor swimming pool opened in Soltau on December 19, 1973, and an artificial ice rink was inaugurated on December 6, 1975. In 1974, during test drilling on the site of the outdoor swimming pool, Sole was discovered; In 1985 this spring was recognized as a healing spring, and the Soltau-Therme brine bath opened on September 17, 1990 . Since then, the city of Soltau has been a state-approved place with a brine spa .

On January 1, 1999, the municipal utilities took over the management of the wastewater disposal, for which the travel and traffic office was outsourced. Stadtwerke Soltau has been offering its private and commercial customers exclusively 100% natural electricity since 2008. In the 04/2010 and 05/2011 editions, the consumer magazine Öko-Test awarded the municipal utilities 2nd place.
