The Stadtwerke Uelzen GmbH is a municipal company , which completely through the city Uelzen is worn as the sole shareholder. The company has been using the brand name mycity in its services since 2001 . The municipal utilities take on various functions for the urban infrastructure in Uelzen. In addition to the supply of energy and water, the company operates the indoor and outdoor swimming pool as well as local public transport in Uelzen.

history

In 1856, the city of Uelzen granted permission for a private gas supply company, the "Uelzen Gas Lighting Institute". In 1898 the construction of the first waterworks took place, with which the municipal water supply was started. In 1908, the city was also supplied with electrical energy by the electricity company on Lüneburger Strasse. The administrations of the three energy companies, which at that time were already in the hands of the city, were merged in 1954 and operated as "Stadtwerke Uelzen electricity, gas and waterworks". The reorganization into a corporation with limited liability took place in 1971. In 1988 the municipal utilities took over the swimming pool operation. Stadtwerke Uelzen has been the operator of the bus network since 2002, which extends beyond the city limits of Uelzen through the cooperation with Regionalbus Braunschweig GmbH (rbb).

Business areas

energy

Energy supply is the oldest business area of Stadtwerke Uelzen. However, the municipal utilities are not only energy providers, but as distribution network operators they are also responsible for the networks and systems for energy supply in the municipality of the city of Uelzen. The supply network for electricity is operated at the distribution network levels 20 kV and 0.4 kV. The municipal utilities have lines for high, medium and low pressure for the distribution of natural gas. Since the beginning of 2008, the municipal utilities have been supplying their customers in the electricity sector exclusively with electricity generated from hydropower. The municipal utilities produce electricity from renewable sources at various locations in Uelzen. Solar power is generated by photovoltaic systems on the roofs of the police station, the Badeland BADUE and the Uelzener Hundertwasser station .

water

The municipal drinking water supply in Uelzen began with the construction of the waterworks in 1898/99. In the treatment plant, the raw water obtained from the Uelzen city forest is still freed from impurities, enriched with oxygen and the pH value is regulated to ensure drinking water quality. To protect the groundwater, a water protection area of twelve square kilometers was designated by the city at the request of the municipal utility. The quality of the groundwater in this area is checked at 60 groundwater measuring points.

Baths

Since 1989, the operation of the baths has been a division of the Stadtwerke. The 'Badeland Uelzen (BADUE)' includes an indoor swimming pool and an outdoor pool. The centerpiece of the indoor pool is a 50 m long swimmer pool. In addition, there are non-swimmers and paddling pools, whirlpools and a wellness area. The outdoor area includes a 50 m long outdoor sports pool, a non-swimmer pool, a warm water pool, water tents and an adventure slide.

Public transport

Stadtwerke Uelzen took over local public transport in 2002. A tariff and transport community was founded in 2003 together with the rbb. In 2005 the route network was revised. The buses run every 30 minutes on four bus routes.

Sustainability projects

Wind energy

In cooperation with around 28 other municipal utilities from Germany, Austria and Switzerland, Stadtwerke Uelzen will operate 80 offshore wind turbines from 2011 in an offshore area 45 kilometers north of the island of Borkum. When operations start in 2011, the “ Borkum West II ” wind farm will deliver a maximum of around 200 megawatts of electricity. This should save around 400,000 tons of CO 2 annually. Due to a delay in the grid connection by the responsible HVDC grid operator TenneT TSO , the first expansion stage of the wind farm will probably only go into operation at the end of 2013.

Participation in the SBE in Ukraine

As a partner, Stadtwerke Uelzen participate in the agricultural commitment of Sustainable Bio Energy Holding GmbH (SBE) in Ukraine. The SBE cultivates agricultural land and cultivates it with renewable raw materials such as rapeseed, grain and soy. With agricultural production, the company wants to secure renewable raw materials in the long term.

However, this project is very much criticized because it is not in the black and, according to newspaper reports, many management errors have been made. There was then a lot of public debate about whether municipal utilities should participate in this type of risky project.

The management of Stadtwerke Uelzen consciously sees the investment in Ukraine as a risk project. An unsuccessful project would therefore not endanger Stadtwerke Uelzen financially.

As a result of the participation of Stadtwerke Uelzen GmbH in SBE, Stadtwerke Uelzen generated a total loss of 2.6 million euros in 2012. In total, more than 3.3 million euros of the total investment were written off this year.

E-mobility

As the operator of local public transport in Uelzen, Stadtwerke Uelzen is involved in the “Electric Mobility & Municipal Companies” project of the Trianel municipal utility group . The aim of the project is to ensure environmentally friendly mobility for the future. For example, it is planned to charge electric vehicles via the Uelzen power grid at charging stations. This should avoid CO 2 and noise emissions.

Communication campaign "Krüm (m) el"

Stadtwerke Uelzen was nominated for the “Goldenen Funken 2010” - the German Prize for Business Communication - with a sales-promoting communication campaign . The aim of the campaign in summer 2009 was to generate attention for the green electricity of Stadtwerke Uelzen in the Hamburg metropolitan region. In July 2009 the public discussion about an alternative to nuclear energy was extremely explosive in Hamburg: Incidents at the Krümmel nuclear power plant had led to a voltage drop in the network and serious blackouts. The nominated campaign used the topicality and public attention of the topic of energy supply to publicize the energy products of Stadtwerke Uelzen. As part of a postcard campaign, the claim "Guaranteed without crooks: natural power from Uelzen" was distributed, which was supported by the subtitle " You get the change quickly baked" and a biscuit motif. The postcards were distributed at central locations in downtown Hamburg.

mycity magazine

Stadtwerke Uelzen regularly publish the so-called mycity magazine, which is distributed to all households in the city. The contents of the magazine are articles on current urban topics as well as projects and products of Stadtwerke Uelzen.
