history

The history of the Odessa funicular began in 1841 with the opening of the Potemkin Stairs. The funicular itself was designed by engineer NI Pyatnitsky and opened on June 8, 1902. It was equipped with two 35-person passenger cabins from Paris. After being replaced by escalators in 1969, which had to be closed in 1997, the city decided in 1998 to restore the funicular. Construction began in the same year, but was delayed and only ended in 2005. On September 2, 2005, the cable car was reopened.
