The Pfaffenthal-Kirchberg funicular railway ( French : Funiculaire Pfaffenthal-Kirchberg) is a funicular railway that operates in Luxembourg and was opened on December 10, 2017.

It connects the Pfaffenthal-Kirchberg station , which was newly created in 2017, with the Kirchberg plateau and is operated by the Chemins de Fer Luxembourgeois (CFL). The cable car is located next to the Grand Duchess Charlotte Bridge (also: Pont Grand-Duchesse Charlotte , popularly known as Rout Bréck / Rote Brücke / Pont Rouge ).

In 2020, a share of 25% for public transport should be achieved in Luxembourg. These projects - Pfaffenthal-Kirchberg railway station, Kirchberg-Altstadt funicular and tram - are intended to make another important contribution to local transport mobility and its increased attractiveness, relieving the Luxembourg railway station (main station) and reducing travel times for passengers from Ettelbrück and Esch an der Alzette arrive, be shortened significantly.

On September 12, 2011, the project was presented to the public for the first time as a study. Pre-project studies were carried out in 2013 and 2014. The extensive earthworks began in May 2015 and the construction of the route followed in March 2016. The tracks were laid in August 2016 . In February 2017 the construction work of the valley station was completed and in March the cable car cabins were delivered. The shell of the mountain station was completed in July 2017. The official commissioning took place on December 10, 2017.

Description of facilities and routes

Double
funicular system with tunnel and Abt switch

The Pfaffenthal-Kirchberg funicular railway consists of two parallel, independent funicular railways, each with two vehicles in opposite operation, which were planned and manufactured by the Doppelmayr / Garaventa Group . In view of the high availability (98%) aimed for in urban transport, the concept of two parallel systems was created. The main advantages, however, are the smooth flow of people, minimal waiting times, redundancy ... Both systems can be operated in fully automated and synchronized schedule mode.

The double-track line is 200 m long and has a track width of 1800 mm each. In the middle of each of the two routes there is a passing point with an Abt switch , a rigid switch at which the uphill and downhill vehicles pass. With a maximum incline of 19.7%, the railway overcomes a height difference of around 39 m. Shortly after the Pfaffenthal valley station there are two connected tunnels.

The Pfaffenthal valley station of the funicular and the railway stop are in the same building on two different levels. The Kirchberg mountain station and the stop for the newly built “ Stater Tramtram are on the same level.

The travel time is 63 seconds, depending on the rhythm of the journey, and the cars stop at the cable car stations for 105 seconds to get on and off.

The maximum travel speed for each cable car system is 7 m / s. Each cable car system can transport 3000 (3600) people per hour (a total of 6000 p / h, in compacted operation 7200 p / h).

Due to the noise, the rails were fastened in a fully elastic manner along the entire route. The units for the brake hydraulics were equipped with quiet pumps, and external fans were deliberately avoided in the motors and gearboxes.

The cable cars are part of the public transport system in Luxembourg and are in daily operation.

It is free to use.

The total costs of the system (station building, Pfaffenthal-Kirchberg stop, funicular and Kirchberg tram ) were estimated at over 96 million euros. This cost estimate was ultimately undercut by around 20%.

After one year of operation, 1,500,000 passengers were transported between the Pfaffenthal train station and the Kirchberg district using the two funiculars A and B. (Average - as of November 2018: 7500 passengers on weekdays, 2000 passengers on weekends)

vehicles

The two cars in each system were manufactured by the company CWA Constructions SA (CWA) and are connected to one another by a steel pull rope . The pull rope (diameter of 30 mm, SEALE type) of each system is driven and diverted in the Kirchberg mountain station. Because of the constant gradient, the system has no opposite rope. The wagons are accelerated and braked via the ropes. In order to adapt to the incline of the route, wagons are raised towards the valley station side. The total of four carriages of the two funiculars have a capacity of 168 people each in normal operation and 172 people in condensed operation.

The four cars are each 11.8 m long, 3.5 m wide and between 2.6 (mountain side) and 4.7 m (valley side) high. Each car weighs around 18 tons when empty  .

Due to the chosen design of the wagons with a single level and wheelchair-friendly transitions, the wagons can be used by people with reduced mobility and are highly valued by cyclists.

Drive technology

In normal operation, the lift is fully automatic, monitored by the operator in the mountain station, and electrically accelerated and braked. The drive consists of a frequency voltage converter, three-phase asynchronous machine operated in four-quadrant operation (left / right + motor generator), block gear, emergency drive, drive and counter pulleys.
