Burgerkill is an Indonesian metal band that has dedicated itself to the varieties of death and thrash metal . The group's name is an ironic reference to the Burger King fast food chain .

history

The band's founder and the only constant member since 1995 is guitarist Ebenz (civil: Aris Tanto), who moved from Jakarta to Bandung in the mid-1990s to continue his studies there. There he met the musicians Ivan Scumbag ( singer ), Kimung ( bassist ) and Dadan ( drummer ), with whom he founded Burgerkill in May 1995 . The following year, the first musical sign of life, one on appeared Musikkassette posted demo with three songs Revolt! , My Self and Offered Sucks .

Even before the release of the debut album Dua Sisi in 2000 via Riotic Records, the split release 3 Way Split was released via a label from Malaysia , in which Infireal from Malaysia and Watch It Fall from France took part.

In 2003, the major label Sony Music Entertainment (SME) released the successor Berkarat , on which the band sings exclusively in their native language. After a three year break, during which the band u. a. left her label SME, Beyond Coma and Despair came through the record company Revolt Records on the market. The label also released the studio album Venomous in 2015 .

In Indonesia the band was over the time u. a. as support for The Black Dahlia Murder , Helloween , As I Lay Dying and Himsa active, in 2009 she was in the western part of Australia headlining on The Invasion Of Noise tour, in which they received support of local opening acts. In addition, she was in Australia at the Soundwave Festival 2009 , at u. a. Devil Driver , In Flames and Lamb of God appeared.

In 2015 the band was booked for the European festivals Wacken Open Air (Germany), Bloodstock Open Air (England) and Obscene Extreme (Czech Republic). The concert tour was released as a documentary film under the title Bandung Blasting Euro Tour 2015 on DVD in November 2017 . The band appeared in Wacken as the first representative of Indonesia and then met the Indonesian Consul General Sylvia Arifin in Hamburg.

style

The band plays a mix of Thrash Metal, which is reminiscent of the early phase of Sepultura , Death Metal, which is similar to Morbid Angel , and commercial metalcore and also intersperses elements of electronic music.

reception

The 2011 Venomous work received 16 out of 20 points on Spirit-of-Metal.com . The fourth album in 15 years would not reinvent the wheel, nor would it be the most original album of the year, according to Loud Mag from Australia - but at the same time, everything comes perfectly to the point. The bottom line is that the album is a real surprise package and an excellent release. The reviewer of The Metal Forge (also from Australia) sees it similarly : At first impression Venomous looks like primitive Thrash Metal, but this impression is deceptive. It quickly becomes apparent that the band is melodic and dynamic and also has a progressive heartbeat.

successes

At the Indonesian Music Award 2004, the band received the award for “Best Metal Production” for their second work, Berkarat .

In 2006, Burgerkill contributed Shadow Of Sorrow and Angkuh from their then current album Beyond Coma and Despair, two pieces to the soundtrack of the horror film Hantu Jeruk Purut ("Geist von Jeruk Purut"). A year later, Laknat and Darah Hitam Kebencian (also two tracks from the 2006 album Shadow Of Sorrow ) again participated in a soundtrack, this time for the horror film Malam Jumat Kliwon ("Friday Night in Kliwon"). In the year of its release, Shadow Of Sorrow was ranked among the best 20 albums of the year by the Indonesian edition of the music magazine Rolling Stone and one year later it was placed at number 113 of the "150 greatest Indonesian albums of all time".

The last studio album to date, Venomous , was listed by Rolling Stone Indonesia as the best album release in 2011.

In 2013, Burgerkill was honored by the British edition of Metal Hammer with the Golden Gods Award in the "Metal as F * ck" category.
