Stanislao Nievo

Stanislao Nievo (also Stanis Nievo ; born June 30, 1928 in Milan , † July 13, 2006 in Rome ) was an Italian writer, poet, journalist and filmmaker.

Life

Nievo was the second of four children born to his father Antonio, the owner of a button factory, and the noble Xavierine Nasalli Rocca. Significant cultural workers can be found among his ancestors: Erasmo di Valvasone , Ciro di Pers , Ermes di Colloredo and Ippolito Nievo on his father's side, Joseph and Xavier de Maistre on his mother's side .

During the Depression in 1929, the family business also got into crisis and the family moved to Borgo Montello on the Pontine Plain . She stayed there until 1946 but had some properties in Rome and the castle of Colloredo di Monte Albano as property.

After attending high school and graduating in natural sciences, Nievo traveled through Central Europe and the North for a while, practicing various activities such as a dock worker, cabin boy, fruit picker, metal worker and Italian teacher. In the mid-1950s he began as a reporter for Giornale d'Italia , which was followed by other commissions over time, for example for la Repubblica (1976), La Stampa (1978), Il Tempo (from 1987 to 1990), L'Indipendente ( 1994) and for Il Giornale .

In addition, Nievi wrote a number of novels, short stories and poems as an author; for this literary work, he has received several awards: the novels Il Prato in fondo al mare and Le Isole del Paradiso received the 1975 Premio Campiello respectively. 1987 the Premio Strega . The expressiveness of his language was also emphasized in his poetry volumes Viaggio verde from 1976, Canto di pietra from 1989 and his swan song Barca solare 2001.

With translations by English authors he added further chapters to his work; so he dealt with Kipling , Defoe and an anthology, E Dio creò le grandi balene , in which he presented literary confrontations with whales. Between 1979 and 1985 Nievo also worked as a radio writer for the RAI ; Since the mid-1960s he has also worked for film: as director of two works and, in collaboration with Gualtiero Jacopetti, as an organizer of controversial works in the Mondo series .

Nievo campaigned for the WWF and the organization Foresta Ideale , headed the Fondazione Ippolito Nievo for several years and was the source of ideas for "I Parchi Letterari". In 2003 he received the “Premio Eugenio Montale” for travel journalism.
