Stanislaw Alexejewitsch Moltschanow ( Russian Станислав Алексеевич Молчанов , English transcription Stanislav Molchanov ; born December 21, 1940 in Snetinowo , Ivanovo Oblast ) is a Russian mathematician.

Molchanov studied mathematics from 1958 at Lomonossow University, graduating from Eugene Dynkin in 1963, where he also received his doctorate in 1967 (Some problems in the theory of Martin margins (Russian)). His habilitation (Russian doctorate) took place in 1983 (spectral theory of random operators (Russian)). In 1966 he became a lecturer in the department of probability theory and mathematical statistics at Lomonosov University, where he became a professor in 1971 and was given a full professorship in 1988. In 1990 he went to the United States and was visiting professor at the University of California, Irvine and the University of Southern California before becoming a professor at the University of North Carolina in Charlotteville in 1994 .

Among other things, he was visiting professor at the International School for Probability Theory in St. Flour, at Ruhr University Bochum, ETH Zurich, EPFL Lausanne, TU Berlin, in Paris (Universities Paris IV and VI), Ottawa, Rome, Santiago de Chile, at the Isaac Newton Institute and Bielefeld.

He deals with the geometric access to Markov processes (Martin boundaries, diffusion on Riemannian manifolds), spectral theory (localization in random media, spectrum of differential operators on Riemannian manifolds) and physical processes in disordered media (averaging, intermittency , applications in geophysics , Astrophysics, oceanography) and waves in periodic and disordered media with applications in optics and quantum graphs.

With I. Goldsheid and L. Pastur , he proved localization in the Anderson model in one dimension in 1977 and with Michael Aizenman for large coupling constants and energies near the edge of the spectrum.

In 1990 he was invited to speak at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Kyoto ( Localization and Intermittency: new results ). In 2012 he became a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society .
