Stanisław Suchodolski (born May 4, 1936 in Warsaw ) is a Polish numismatist and archaeologist .

Suchodolski completed his studies in archeology and history at the University of Warsaw in 1957 with a master's degree with a study of coin technology in medieval Poland . This was followed by a doctorate in 1961 , his habilitation in 1971 and in 1983 he was appointed professor at the University of Warsaw. He was involved in excavations in Poland ( Czersk ring wall ) and France (Montaigut and Condiorcet). He worked in the Institute for Archeology and Ethnology (formerly Institute for the History of Material Culture) of the Academy of Sciences.

He is the author of numerous scientific articles on medieval numismatics in Poland and other European countries, especially in the early Middle Ages . Some of the publications appeared in Western European languages, especially German and French.

Using archaeological and scientific methods, he corrected early medieval numismatics in Poland and neighboring countries on a number of important issues, even if it meant saying goodbye to classical doctrines. For many years (1963–2006) Suchodolski was the editor of the internationally renowned magazine "Wiadomości Numizmatyczne", which he co-founded in 1957. He played a major role in coordinating scientific projects in Poland. For this purpose, he created the Polish Numismatic Commission in 1989, which brings together scholars from different parts of the country. Suchodolski worked at the Institute of Archeology of the Polish Academy of Sciences. For 10 years he was a member of the International Numismatic Commission and at times its vice-president. In 1998 he received the Archer M. Huntington Medal of the American Numismatic Society for his services in New York . Together with Peter Ilisch and his student Mateusz Bogucki , he is currently leading the Poland project of the Numismatic Commission of the Federal Republic of Germany .

In the communist era, Suchodolski was close to the Solidarność union .
