Origin of name

The English name of this place comes from the then British War and Colonial Minister and Prime Minister Lord Stanley , the 14th Earl of Derby. Its Chinese name in Cantonese "Chek Chue" or in standard Chinese "Chizhu" ( 赤柱 , Chìzhù , Jyutping Cek 3 cyu 5  - "red column") has its origin from the many red silk wool trees at that time ( 木棉 , mùmián , Jyutping muk 6 min 4 , Bombax ceiba ) in this area, which provided a beautiful "red shadow play" in the morning at dusk and looked like "red columns" in the background. There used to be a Hakka village with the same Chinese name in Stanley .

After the annexation of Hong Kong in 1842, Stanley became the temporary British administrative center before being relocated to the newly established Victoria City on the north coast of the island of Hong Kong .
