Stanley Grenz

Stanley James Grenz (born January 7, 1950 in Alpena, Michigan , † March 11, 2005 in Vancouver , Canada ) was an American Christian theologian and ethicist in the Baptist tradition.

Life

Stanley Grenz grew up as the son of a German Baptist minister in Michigan, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana and Colorado. He studied theology at the University of Colorado and Denver Seminary , was ordained a Baptist pastor in 1976, and received his doctorate magna cum laude from the University of Munich in 1978 under Wolfhart Pannenberg with a dissertation on the Baptist Puritan Isaac Backus.

After completing his studies, he worked as a pastor in Winnipeg for two years , then taught systematic theology and Christian ethics at the North American Baptist Seminary in Sioux Falls from 1981 to 1990 . In 1992 he was appointed Pioneer McDonald Professor of Baptist Heritage, Theology and Ethics at Carey Theological College in Vancouver . He also taught at Regent College in Vancouver. In 2002 he taught for a year at Baylor University in Texas and then accepted his professorship again at Carey Theological College. In addition to teaching, he has held various positions for the World Baptist Federation and national Baptist bodies, and was one of the advisory editors of Christianity Today .

On March 11, 2005, he died unexpectedly in his sleep from a massive cerebral haemorrhage caused by an aneurysm .

Trinity Western University awarded him an honorary doctorate posthumously in April 2005, and the Princeton Theological Review dedicated an entire issue to him in spring 2006.

Stanley Grenz was married with two children.
