Star Trek is a third-person shooter - and action-adventure - video game from US developer Digital Extremes that was first released on April 23, 2013 (in North America). It was published by Bandai Namco Entertainment and Paramount Pictures in collaboration with CBS Studios International and is playable on PlayStation 3 , Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows . Production lasted three years and was the first in-house video game development by Paramount Studios, which had chosen not to license the development to third parties. The production team sought to work with the people who work on the Star Trek films to avoid the typical pitfalls associated with video games. The video games that influenced Star Trek included the Mass Effect series, Uncharted, and Metroid Prime, as well as certain elements that mirrored episodes of Starship Enterprise : Arena and Amok Time.

The game is set to the Star Trek Kelvin universe and takes place between the events of Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek Into Darkness (2013). The game continues to follow the adventures of Captain James T. Kirk , Starfleet, and the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) . The player takes control of Kirk or the first officer Spock and investigates the theft of a terraformer , which can create wormholes in the universe, from the colony of New Vulkan by the Gorn .
