Starigrad is a village in Croatia that has belonged to the city of Senj since 1994 . It is in the Lika-Senj County .

location

Starigrad is located in a small bay of the Velebit Canal , on the western edge of the Velebit Mountains , 26 km south of Senj.

Opposite is the island of Rab and nearby is the island of Goli Otok , on which the Yugoslav government held criminals and opponents of the regime between 1949 and 1989.

The village consists of two parts. The old part of the village is right by the sea and is difficult to reach, as there is only a narrow road leading down steeply to the village. The upper part is on the hill along the Magistrala road .

history

When Starigrad was founded is unknown. There are ruins of Roman buildings.

Starigrad was a place of residence of fishermen, but many of the residents were pirates who made their living from the raids on Venetian ships. In the upper part of the village mainly shepherds and farmers lived.

In the 16th century, attacks on Ottoman ships were carried out from Starigrad , which were then besieging Senj.

In 1772 the church of Sv. Jakov (St. Jacob) built.

Sightseeing

The castle ruins on a hill northwest of the lower village offer a wonderful view. Slightly below are the ruins of the Sveta Jelena church. The old stone church of Sv. Jakov's from 1772 is still well preserved.
