Stathatou painter
A Stathatou painter is an Attic - Late Geometric vase painter whose works date back to the last third of the 8th century BC. BC (Late Geometric IIb) to be dated.
The Stathatou painter belongs to the environment of the workshop of Athens 894 and is thus in a line that led from the Dipylon painter via the Subdipylon group to him and his colleagues, such as the Philadelphia painter . Some important innovations in Attic vase painting and pottery are ascribed to the Stathatou painter, who was probably a vase painter and potter rolled into one. He was the first vase painter to show Athens' mythical creatures on his vases : sphinxes , centaurs and winged goats. He was also the first to show lions facing each other and animals on the tree of life . Vase shapes introduced by him are oinochoes , the neck of which merges into the body in an arc, and cauldrons that rested on openwork stands. He got his emergency name after his name vase from the Stathatou collection, which today belongs to the National Archaeological Museum in Athens. Possibly he was the teacher of the Mesogeia painter and the orientalizing style ( Protoattic style ).
