Statistisk sentralbyrå in Oslo

The Statistisk sentralbyrå (Eng. Statistics Norway , in Norway mostly SSB ) is Norway's central statistical authority . It is administratively subordinate to the Ministry of Finance , but its content-related tasks are independent of it. The SSB has around 850 employees, spread over two locations in Kongsvinger and Oslo .

The agency publishes around 860 statistics a year and 60 articles.

Organization and tasks

The main task of the SSB is to collect, compile and publish official statistics on topics such as demography, the economy and social issues. Research also plays a major role. The anonymized results are regularly published free of charge on the agency's website. In particular, the quarterly statistics on population development in the municipalities receive a lot of attention in the Norwegian press.

The work of the SSB is regulated in the Statistics Act, which was first drafted in 1907 and revised in 1989 and 2019. It is also stated here that all residents, organizations and businesses of Norway are obliged to provide information on request. Failure to comply can result in fines ( tvangsmulkt ). Private individuals can also be interviewed by the SSB, but most of the information is voluntary. Occasionally, however, mandatory surveys are carried out, the non-response of which can be met with fines.

In addition to surveys and information, the SSB can also access a number of government databases: the Ministry of Finance's register of residents, the Brønnøysundregistrene , property information from the Kartverket and the labor statistics from the NAV .

The SSB is divided into four departments: the research department, the department for prices, financial and foreign statistics, the department for personal and social statistics and the department for national accounting and economic statistics. There are also departments for IT, administration and communication.
