The statue of Saint Nepomuk and Maria (popularly statue of Mary , also plague column called) in Timisoara ( Romania ) is a Baroque monument located in front of the representative building of the old town hall on the Piata Libertăţii .

history

The statue was created from sandstone by the Viennese sculptors Blim and Wasserburger from 1753 to 1756 . In the center of the statue, St. Nepomuk , patron saint of the Catholic Banats since 1727, a cross. Above him is the Virgin Mary with a wreath on her head. The statue commemorates the plague victims of 1738 and 1739.

It was dismantled into pieces in 1756 and built in its current location on the waterway across the Danube , the Tisza and the Bega Canal . In 1852 the monument had to give way to the victory monument of the revolution of 1848/49 and was erected in front of the Transylvanian Gate , where the Continental Hotel is today . In 1969 it returned to its original location on Freiheitsplatz , where it had already stood for twelve decades. In 1994 it was restored by the Timișoara artist Ioan Oprescu on an initiative of the Banat Swabian country team .
