Statue of Europe (Bernard Romain)

The statue of Europe named Unity in Peace is a sculpture in Brussels' European Quarter. It is a gift from the French sculptor Bernard Romain to the European Commission and was shaped, sanded and painted from resin by visually impaired children under the direction of the artist . It was installed in the Van Maerlant garden in 2003, on the occasion of the European Year of People with Disabilities and the EU's eastward expansion .

The official inauguration took place on December 9, 2003 by the Vice-President of the Commission Neil Kinnock and the then Commissioner for Education and Culture Viviane Reding .

The statue is more than 5 meters high and weighs approximately 800 kg.
