The approximately 37 square kilometers and a maximum of about 1.384 billion cubic meters comprehensive reservoir Bin El Ouidane in the province of Beni Mellal in the region of Beni Mellal-Khénifra is one of the largest in Morocco . The 133 m high dam is the second highest in Morocco and at the same time one of the highest in Africa.

The reservoir is located on the north side of the High Atlas Mountains approx. 55 km (driving distance) south of Beni Mellal and approx. 35 km south of Afourar at an altitude of approx. 780 m .
History and function
The first explorations and plans for the construction of a reservoir were carried out as early as the 1920s and 1930s. The project was completed between 1949 and 1953. The dam, which was put into operation in 1954, serves to irrigate an area of over 100 km² of arable land in the Tadla Plain , to supply water and to generate electricity . With the three installed 45 MW turbines, 287 GWh of electricity can be generated per year .

The reservoir is popular with anglers; pike, perch, carp and other fish can be caught here. In Bin El Ouidane there are several hotels.
