Staz Johnson

Stewart "Staz" Johnson (* 1964 in Yorkshire ) is a British comic artist .

Life and work

Johnson began working as an illustrator for Marvel UK, the British subsidiary of the US-American Marvel publisher , in the 1980s . There he initially designed comic series based on toy products such as Transformers or Action Force .

Johnson first worked for the American Marvel publishing house in 1989 when he took over the comic series GI Joe European Missions as a draftsman, which was essentially reprinted as Action Force material under a different name. In 1992 Johnson got his first engagement as a draftsman for the British publisher 2000 AD .

After Johnson had worked temporarily as a storyboard designer for advertising agencies and cartoon productions in the early 1990s, he returned to Marvel in the mid-1990s. There he drew series such as Thor (1994), Force Works , Avengers and Spider Man : Funeral for an Octopus (1995).

In 1995 Johnson was finally signed by Marvel's competitor DC-Comics . There he first worked in 1995 as a substitute draftsman for Graham Nolan on the series Detective Comics , one of the main titles in the DC publishing program, before he only worked as a regular draftsman on the series Robin from 1996 to 1999 , which is about the adventures of Batman's young assistant, and then from 2000 to 2001 on the series Catwoman , which deals with the antics of a charming, erotic professional thief. His artistic partners on this work were the writers Chuck Dixon (on Detective Comics and Robin) and Brownie Chartlon (on Catwoman). In addition, he carried out various tasks as a guest artist, for example for series such as Nightwing or Superboy . His last work for DC was the crossover Batman / Aliens II (2003), which DC published in collaboration with Dark Horse .

In 2003 Johnson returned to Marvel. There he has since worked on the series Wolverine (2003), New X-Men (2004), Underworld (2006). There were also special projects such as the One-Shot Doctor Octopus: Negative Exposure # 1 (2003), the comic for the 2nd Spider-Man film: Spider-Man 2: The Movie (2004), the publisher's internal Crossover Cable & Deadpool (2006) and the special edition Civil War: War Crimes (2007).
