The Ste-Catherine Church.

The Romanesque , Roman Catholic Church of Ste-Catherine in Alland'Huy-et-Sausseuil , a French municipality in the Ardennes department , bears the patronage of Catherine of Alexandria and is listed as a Monument Historique .

history

On December 14, 1145 the village Alendusium (Alland'Huy) was in a bull by Pope Eugene III. mentioned among the properties of the Saint-Remi Abbey of Reims . Under the Ancien Régime , the village community maintained tense relationships with the abbey and its governors, the Dukes of Rethel . The dukes often raised high bailiwick taxes, but did not provide any essential protection. The church was mentioned as Katharinenkirche in a directory in the 14th century and again in 1779.

On August 27, 1986, the Ste-Catherine church was placed under monument protection as a classified Monument historique .

architecture

Exterior

The western portal porch is surmounted by three ogival bulges , which are based on small columns with leaf capitals . An archivolt adorned with palmettes stands above the garment . However, the tympanum has no decoration. A large ogival, domed window can be seen above the portal . The facade and the ship wall are reinforced on both sides by retaining walls.

The choir facade has five sides. The square tower above the transept has two arched window openings on each wall part and is surmounted by a four-sided roof and a cornice on ornate corbels.

Interior

The large pointed arches of the ship's arcades stand between bulges surmounted by archivolts adorned with palmettes . Each column is decorated with small columns with leaf capitals. The ridges fall on the small pillars through cornice abutments that surround the large pillars.

Since the 19th century, the nave vault has replaced the former wooden beam ceiling , which is still preserved in the aisles today.
