Steatocranus tinanti ( synonym : Leptotilapia tinanti ) is a species of cichlid found in the Malebo pool and in the rapids of the lower Congo .

features

Males of Steatocranus tinanti reach a length of up to 15 cm, females remain significantly smaller at 10 cm. The species is a very slender and elongated representative of the genus Steatocranus and, together with the humpback cichlid ( Steatocranus casuarius ) known from the aquarium hobby, has the clearest sexual dimorphism . The males develop a forehead hump, which gets bigger with increasing age and have a very massive mouth. In both sexes, the dorsal and anal fins are clearly drawn out in the soft radiating section. The tail stalk is long; the large caudal fin is elongated.

Steatocranus tinanti is usually uniformly gray or olive yellow in color, occasionally they show two dark longitudinal bands or 4 or 5 transverse bands on the sides of the body. The fins are gray, brownish, or colorless. There is sometimes a dark area in the center of the dorsal fin.

Way of life

Steatocranus tinanti is a flow- loving species and a cave breeder that forms a father-mother family . Up to 100 young fish hatch per clutch.
