Steel was an English new wave of British heavy metal band from Birmingham that was formed in 1980 and disbanded in 1984.

history

The band was formed in 1980 and consisted of singer Paul Tunnecliffe and drummer Simon Atkins, who had previously played in other bands, as well as bassist John Fox. The latter was replaced by Stefan Cartwright within a few months. On the electric guitars, the line-up was supplemented by Dave Brookes and Paul Roe. Former Judas Priest manager Dave Corke and former Judas Priest drummer John Hinch acted as managers for the band. The first local appearances followed, which the first record labels showed interest, whereupon Steel signed a record deal with Neat Records . About this in 1981 the single Rock Out appeared with the song All Systems Go as B-side . The recordings for this had taken place in the Impulse Studios , but the single sold only moderately. The publication followed appearances, among others together with Iron Maiden . 1982 All Systems Go was reused for the Neat Records sampler 60 Minutes Plus . A little later Paul Tunnecliffe left the line-up, the remaining members then moved the band's headquarters to Wolverhampton . They tried to fill the gap with the singer Rick Chase ( Mama's Boys ). After demo recordings in which she recorded new songs like End of the Line , and one or two last appearances with Magnum , Steel broke up in 1984. Ian West had previously replaced Simon Atikins that same year.

style

According to Malc Macmillan, the band's origins lie in traditional rock of the 1970s. The single offers an excellent version of the dynamic NWoBHM music and sounds like a mixture of the energy of Hollow Ground and the melody of Stagefright . The theme song is very similar to Detroit Rock City by Kiss . Matthias Mader summed up the New Wave of British Heavy Metal in NWoBHM. The Glory Days put together that it was average metal that was no better or worse than most of the other singles of 1981. The International Encyclopedia of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal found that the single was music with a good heavy -Metal sound can be heard.
