history

The Steen & Strøm Magasin has long been the main house and is still department store and shopping center of Steen & Strøm in Oslo .

Samuel Strøm had founded a grocery store in Kristiania as early as 1797 . When he died in 1818, the business was continued by his widow Else Strøm until their son Christian Strøm took over in 1829. In 1856, shortly before his death, Christian Strøm passed it on to his nephew and adopted son Samuel Strøm, Jr. and the husband of his adopted daughter Emil Steen. The company called Steen & Strøm was founded in 1858 when Emil Steen and Samuel Strøm merged their companies into one company. Samuel Strøm junior died in 1876 and Emil Steen brought the widow Augusta Strøm into the company as a new partner in 1919. In 1884 the descendants Christian Steen, Johan Steen and Christian Strøm took over the company as partners. Their descendants, Erling Steen and Eyvind Strøm, moved into the company as partners in 1914 and Nils Steen in 1919, and in the 1930s the three finally took over the company together. Emil Steen, another family member, was just a board member, but his son Christian Steen became the company's CEO in 1964.

In 1874 the company opened at Kongens gate 23 in Kristiania , the first department store, the Steen & Strøm Magasin, in a large new building with shopping facilities on four floors. The building was built by the architect Paul Due , but burned down completely after a fire in 1929. After the fire, the Steen & Strøm Magasin department store, which still exists today, was built by Steen & Strøm with five floors and three basement floors on the site according to a design by the architect Ole Sverre and was completed in 1930. The new building was based on models of the large modern department stores in Paris at the time and had an open, oval central space as the focal point under a glass roof. Furthermore, this department store in Oslo had the first escalators in Norway. Today the building is always called Steen & Strøm Magasin and is a department store and shopping center of the company. Since then, more and more new and modern department stores and shopping centers have been built in various northern countries, and the chain is one of the largest in Scandinavia .

In the 1990s, after financial problems in the chain, investor Petter Stordalen , who previously worked for the large City Syd shopping center in Trondheim , joined the company . In 1992 he finally took over Steen & Strøm. In 1996, after another shortage, Stordalen was forced to sell its shares to Stein Erik Hagen , who had previously been a partner in Steen & Strøm.

From the takeover to the end of 2008, Hagen held large shares (49.9%) in Steen & Strøm through its Canica family office .

The company was listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange from 1994 to 2007 .

Steen & Strøms new owners

In 2008 the company was sold to Klépierre (56.1%) and ABP Pension Fund (43.9%) for NOK 21.9 billion. ABP Pension Fund is Europe's largest investment company by total assets, almost as big as the Norwegian oil funds. ABP Pension Fund's total assets are approximately 1,650 billion Norwegian kroner or 35 billion euros .
