Hamar station building from 1896, one of Due's most famous works

Paul Due (born August 13, 1835 in Kristiansand ; † February 26, 1919 in Christiania ) was a Norwegian architect and is considered a representative of the Hanover School ( hannoverskolen ), as is Bernhard Christoph Steckmest , with whom he worked from 1870 to 1890.

Due studied engineering in Hanover from 1852 to 1856 . In the first few years after graduating, he worked for various clients in the United States . Among other things, he designed fortifications in the southern states during the American Civil War .

In 1865 he returned to Norway. There he designed 23 buildings in Drammen after the great fire in 1866 .

In 1870 the cooperation with Steckmest began in the Due & Steckmest office community . Steckmest's job was to carry out the plans, while Due had administrative responsibility and supervised the execution of the buildings. During this time a number of famous buildings were built in Christiania.

After working with Steckmest, Due was a railway architect for the Norges Statsbaner from 1891 to 1910 . There he designed more than 2000 buildings in connection with the development of the Norwegian rail network, but some of these buildings must be attributed to his son Paul Armin Due , who was mainly active in the same field between 1900 and 1910. The typical station buildings in Swiss, Art Nouveau and Chinese styles were created. These buildings were mainly to be found on Solørbanen , Gudbrandsdalsbanen , Setesdalsbanen , Brevikbanen , Ofotbanen and Gjøvikbanen . One of his most famous structures from this period is the station building in Hamar from 1896.

While he was railway architect, he has also designed several other outstanding buildings such as the built of brick Vålerenga skole with teacher apartment and gym from the years 1891 to 1895. Drawn he also has 1891 in the House of Culture Festiviteten i Skien integrated and until 2010 operated Teater Ibsen in Skien .
