István Eiben , in German-language film Stefan Eiben (born December 21, 1902 in Budapest , Austria-Hungary , † October 23, 1958 in Budapest) was a Hungarian cameraman .

Live and act

Eiben joined film as a laboratory assistant in 1916 and had photographed his first film at the end of the First World War when he was not even 16. In his 40-year career, Eiben was henceforth behind the camera in a total of 150, mostly very conventionally designed, entertainment films with only rarely artistic aspirations - exceptions: Marie, a Hungarian legend and Menschen im Sturm (both 1932) - behind the camera, including the first sound film his Hungarian homeland (1931). In the 1930s he was also engaged for a number of German-Hungarian co-productions, in 1934 Eiben was also behind the camera in four emigrant films by German-speaking Jews from Hitler's empire ( " Peter ", " End bad, all good ", " Ball im Savoy ") , " Little Mummy " ).

At the end of the 1930s and during the Second World War , István Eiben also worked for some German and German-Hungarian productions that were shot in Budapest studios. For this, his name was Germanized to "Stefan Eiben". István Eiben survived the end of the war unscathed, and immediately after 1945 he continued to shoot films without interruption, albeit at a lower rate. From 1952 until his death, István Eiben also worked as a teacher at the Budapest University of Theater and Film. Eiben was particularly productive during the sound film years; he was behind the camera for up to a dozen films (1941) a year.

István Eiben's grave is in the Farkasrét Cemetery ( Farkasréti temető ) in Budapest.
