Stefan Nowak (sociologist)

Stefan Nowak (born October 21, 1924 [according to birth certificate January 2, 1925 ] in Warsaw ; † September 6, 1989 ibid) was a Polish sociologist and professor at the University of Warsaw .

Life and academic career

Until the outbreak of war he attended the Reytan Lyceum in Warsaw. 1946-1951 he studied sociology at the University of Warsaw, where he heard from Stanisław Ossowski . He was a pioneer in the use of polls in Polish sociology.

In 1958 he received his doctorate at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Warsaw with the thesis Prawa ogólne, zdania historyczne i wyjaśnienia przyczynowe w socjologii , in 1962 he completed his habilitation with the thesis Struktura, geneza i dynamika ideologii społecznej studentów Warszawy . In 1983 he became a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , 1985 corresponding member of the British Academy , 1987 full professor , 1989 member of the Polish Academy of Sciences . From 1976 to 1983 he was a chairman of the Polish Sociological Society.

Among other things, Stefan Nowak supervised the dissertations of the sociologists Antoni Sułek and Ireneusz Krzemiński, who were in turn important .
