Stefan Tewes
Stefan Tewes (born November 24, 1967 in Mülheim an der Ruhr ) is a former German hockey player and Olympic champion . After finishing his sporting career, he became an entrepreneur and runs the Coffee Fellows chain .
Athletic career
Stefan Tewes began his career at Uhlenhorst Mülheim and became German champions with this team in 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988 and 1990, and in 1987 the Mülheim team also won the indoor championship. From 1988 to 1990 Tewes won the European Champion Clubs' Cup three times in a row with Mülheim . In 1990 Tewes moved to Munich and joined Rot-Weiß Munich , with this club he took second place in the German hockey championship in 1991.
The defender was Junior World Champion in 1985 and European Junior Champion in 1988. In 1989 he made his debut in the German national hockey team , with which he won the title at the 1991 European field hockey championship. At the 1992 Olympic Games , Tewes took part in all seven games and achieved the first Olympic victory with the German team in twenty years. In 1993 Stefan Tewes ended his career in the national team. Tewes played a total of 37 international matches.
Stefan's younger brother Jan Peter Tewes was also part of the 1992 Olympic team.
Professional activities
Tewes studied business administration while he was playing hockey. After the end of his sporting career, he completed his studies and received his doctorate. He was taken over by the management consultancy Roland Berger , where he had been working on the side since his studies. At Roland Berger he specialized in retail and moved to London in the late 1990s, where he advised a supermarket chain. There he and his wife Kathrin Tewes developed the idea of a coffee house chain. In London and on business trips to the USA, he got to know and appreciate the concept of “coffee shops”.
Banks only financed the start-up of the business on the condition that Tewes continued to receive a secure income from Roland Berger, which is why Kathrin Tewes became managing director in 1999 when the first Coffee Fellows shop opened on Leopoldstrasse in Munich . Kathrin Tewes had studied to become a teacher, but couldn't find a job. So she set up the branch and ran the day-to-day business. A second branch in Düsseldorf flopped and had to be closed. Another Munich branch worked. In order to be able to give up his consulting activity, outside capital had to flow into the coffee business.
The expansion of Coffee Fellows was largely converted to the franchise system in 2000 and Tewes was able to devote itself entirely to expansion. Business developed positively and Coffee Fellows is the largest operator of coffee houses in Germany (as of 2017) ahead of Starbucks with over 200 branches and around 1200 employees. About 30% of the branches are operated directly, the rest as a franchise. LBBW Asset Management has held a 22% stake in the company since 2014 .
In April 2018, Coffee Fellows opened their first hotel in Dortmund . The coffee house on the ground floor also serves as the hotel's reception, which significantly reduces staffing requirements during the quiet times of the day for the hotel. The company plans to build a hotel chain of medium-sized downtown hotels with a simple standard.
