The Munich Leopold street is the continuation of Ludwig Street , the boulevard Ludwig I , north of Victory gate . The poplar - avenue crosses the districts of Maxvorstadt , Schwabing and Milbertshofen .

description

The approximately 3.6 km long boulevard-like street is lined on both sides with tall trees and wide sidewalks, and in the southern part with numerous cafes. It crosses the Middle Ring in the Petueltunnel / Schenkendorfstraße section . From here it borders on Parkstadt Schwabing in the east . From the height of Milbertshofener Strasse / Domagkstrasse , Leopoldstrasse becomes Ingolstädter Strasse .

architecture

Leopoldstrasse 4

The Siegestor , the art academy , the Leopoldpark , “Schweinchenbau” and the cafeteria of the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , the large sculpture “ Walking Man ” by the artist Jonathan Borofsky , the Münchner Freiheit , the Nymphenburg-Biederstein Canal and the Petuelpark are located on Leopoldstrasse .

Some splendid buildings have been preserved, especially at the southern end of the street. The first house on the left is the villa of Lola Montez , a mistress of Ludwig I, which is now used by the university's student union. In Leopoldstrasse 4, right next to the Siegestor, Martin Dülfer built a palatial building in the classicist Art Nouveau style with stucco decor and a mighty portico from 1896–97 . Dülfer's stately home is also located at Leopoldstrasse 6.

Shopping street and entertainment district

Cafes, restaurants and small shops dominate the southern section. In the side streets east of Münchner Freiheit (Occam-, Feilitzsch-, Sieges-, Marktstraße) there is an entertainment district with many pubs and bars - some with live music. The shopping street , together with Hohenzollernstrasse, forms the Schwabinger T with rental prices of up to 105 euros per m² (as of 2014). Although it is one of the most important arterial roads in Munich , it is partially or completely closed every summer for events such as the Munich Marathon and street festivals such as Corso Leopold , the St. Patrick's Day Parade or the Munich Bladenight . Even after major sporting events ( soccer EM / World Cup or FC Bayern successes) it is often occupied by celebrating fans.

history

Union Move 2000

After the incorporation of Schwabing in 1891, Leopoldstrasse was named after Prince Leopold of Bavaria , the son of the later Prince Regent Luitpold of Bavaria . Previously, the southern part of this street was called Schwabinger Weg , which merged into Schwabinger Landstrasse to the north .

In 1901, the Munich-Schwabing freight depot, which was operated until 1987, was opened on Leopoldstrasse at Parzivalplatz . From 1912 to 1972 a siding led to the Schwabing hospital , which crossed Leopoldstrasse with a level crossing.

In 1962, Leopoldstrasse was the scene of the Schwabing riots and from 1995 to 2001 the Union Moves . Since 1971, tunnels of the Munich underground lines 3 and 6 with the stations Giselastraße and Münchner Freiheit have run under it from Siegestor to Münchner Freiheit . In 2009 tram line 23 was opened, which follows the course of Leopoldstraße from Münchner Freiheit to behind Parzivalplatz.

In 1973 the futuristic Schwabylon building was opened on Leopoldstrasse , but it only existed for six years.
