The Petuelpark is a 7.4 hectare park at the transition between the Munich districts Schwabing and Milbertshofen . The green corridor is partially above the Petuel tunnel . The park was opened on June 27, 2004.

location

The Petuelpark is about four kilometers north of Munich city center. It is located on a section of the Petuelring between Knorrstrasse / Belgradstrasse and Leopoldstrasse . The park extends about 650 meters from west to east and about 60 meters from north to south and connects the two districts of Milbertshofen-Am Hart and Schwabing-West . The Luitpoldpark adjoins it in the southwest . The park is extended to the north for 2.6 km in the green spaces along Ricarda-Huch-Straße / Christoph-von-Gluck-Platz / Oberhofer Platz / Aussiger Platz, which extends to Frankfurter Ring / Rathenaustraße.

profile

The first investigations were carried out as early as 1999; the actual planning and execution was taken over by several landscape architecture offices in Munich. The construction of the tunnel posed a number of problems for the planners: On the one hand, the tunnel was up to 3.50 meters higher than the surrounding area, on the other hand, the terrain gained by the tunnel construction was much longer than it was wide (650 by 60 meters).

This disproportionality gave rise to the idea of designing the park on several levels. The elevated part is dominated by extensive grass areas, on the lower level so-called "theme gardens" have been set up. On the southern side of the park runs the Nymphenburg-Biederstein Canal , which leads east from the Olympiasee and later flows into the Schwabinger Bach and thus into the Isar . As part of the park design, the entire canal bed was renewed, several bridges were rebuilt over the canal and the bank was greened.

In total there are 2,800 perennials, 7,300 shrubs and 389 trees on the 74,000 square meter area. These include ornamental cherries, birches , various pines , plane trees , hedge and climbing plants as well as cattails and swamp irises in the Nymphenburg-Biederstein Canal. There are sturgeon stones in the channel to increase the oxygen content of the water.

To the north of the park is the TSV Milbertshofen site .

The places

Headquarters of the Pfennigparade Foundation at Barlachstrasse 26

The two large squares that run through the park like a north-south band are intended to connect the two very different districts of Milbertshofen (in the north) and Schwabing (in the south).

Fountain place

The central fountains space is located on the Petueltunnel between Torquato Tasso -Straße and Klopstockstrasse road ( 48 ° 10 '39.6 "  N , 11 ° 34' 46.14"  O ). A café with an adjoining beer garden has been built south of the square, with the Kubus exhibition room in Petuelpark in the basement .

Place at the Penny Parade

The place at the Pfennigparade in the west of the park extends over the entire width to the Nymphenburg-Biedersteiner Canal ( 48 ° 10 ′ 39.76 ″  N , 11 ° 34 ′ 37.54 ″  E ). It consists of a northern, upper part (via the Petuel tunnel), which is connected with ramps to the southern lower part (via the Nymphenburg-Biederstein Canal).

The square is named after the Pfennigparade Foundation , whose headquarters are south of the square. The Pfennigparade is a rehabilitation center for people with physical disabilities.

The generation garden and the play band

Generational garden

The generation garden in the northwest and the attached pavilion are intended to serve as a meeting place both for the residents of the different parts of the city and for people from different generations. The garden at Ricarda-Huch-Str. 4 is 400 m², of which 180 m² are communal space. In the garden, beds have been created for free use by the residents. The aim here is to encourage citizens to garden themselves in public space. The pavilion with a barrel roof offers space for events and projects.

To the east of the generation garden, the existing football field was expanded to include a street ball field and several playgrounds. The so-called play tape is also available to the students of the nearby Lion-Feuchtwanger- Gymnasium.

Art in the park

concept

In 1999 the building department of the state capital Munich announced the competition for the art concept. The artist Stephan Huber emerged from the competition as the winner. In his concept, the works of different individual artists should add up to an overall picture. Even then, the café and the generational pavilion were fixed. They form the “social bracket” in the park.

The “Rhetorical Grove” by Harald Klingelhöller is an area for discussing and lecturing as well as drinking water . There are six lecterns in this area. These are of different shapes and sizes and are made of white and black granite. A drinking fountain is created by pressing a button.

Artwork in the park

Roman Signer : Fountain

Bogomir Ecker set up a periscope in the park with which one can observe the traffic in the Petuel tunnel ( 48 ° 10 ′ 40.57 ″  N , 11 ° 34 ′ 40.53 ″  E ). The artist creates a "view from the idyll down into the inferno".

Rodney Graham set up seven chairs in a square of yew hedges ( 48 ° 10 ′ 39.27 ″  N , 11 ° 34 ′ 57.93 ″  E ) . Every day at 4:15 pm you can hear the song "I am on an island" by " The Kinks " in an adaptation of "The Rodney Graham Band".

There is also a white Marienbrunnen created by Hans van Houwellingen in the park . It is a copy of a figure from the 15th century. The water flows into the well through the hand of the baby Jesus. The churches in the vicinity create the desired commitment.

Two green glass creations by the artist Raimund Kummer hang in a glass house. They are reminiscent of the inside of the human eye. The artist raises the question of whether the viewer is protected from the glass balls or the glass balls from the viewer.

The rose pergola by Aribert von Ostrowski represents a place of poetry . Here text and image fragments are depicted in a collage-like manner over frosted glass . The reflection prompts the viewer to “tell the story yourself”. The fonts are borrowed from the Hortus Eystettensis of the Nuremberg pharmacist Basilius Besler .

They look like a pair of forgotten boots Nymphenburg Biedersteiner channel, but suddenly shoots up to a seven-meter-high water fountain from the boots well produced. This is the work of the artist Roman Signer . He has installed another pair of boots on the sidewalk there, from which air escapes in spurts.

The equestrian statue Go! Designed by Pia Stadtbäumer stands on the northeastern edge of the fountain square . ( 48 ° 10 ′ 39.84 "  N , 11 ° 34 ′ 47.41"  E ). It symbolizes the insignia and status symbols of our time. The figure rotates slowly around its own axis, accompanied by the occasional scream of the mule as an expression of the “topicality of the moment”.

The light art work in Petuelpark is made up of the stainless steel steles designed by Dietmar Tanterl . The built-in spotlights of the 70 steles point to the middle ring , which used to run along here.

The cube of the Lenbachhaus

The cube in Petuelpark , which opened on June 7, 2005, is located on Fontänenplatz . The house was planned by the architects Kiessler + Partner . Barbara Bloom , Alexandra Ranner and Kiki Smith were responsible for the artistic design . The elegant pavilion building has a clear design language.

The cube of the Lenbachhaus is located in the basement . The shop window faces the footpath and the canal. Spatial installations are shown in an exhibition that changes three times a year.

The café and beer garden are located in the upper area facing the park level. The cake showcase designed by Alexandra Ranner is located in the entrance area. In the stairwell, small monitors have been built into the wall by Barbera Bloom. These show turning skirts that accompany the guest up to the top. The wall in the café was designed by Kiki Smith. It shows two star constellations orbiting a rose bush.

history

The Petuelpark is a young park. The first planning began in 1999. The costs of building the park (around € 10.5 million) caused some displeasure, as some found them too high. Nevertheless, the district committee decided to build the park.

After the Petuel Tunnel was completed in 2002, construction work could begin on the area above the tunnel. The opening took place on June 27, 2004 at 11:00 am by Lord Mayor Christian Ude . On June 7, 2005, the cube of the Lenbachhaus with café and beer garden on Fontänenplatz was completed.

The Petuelpark is a place on the cultural history trail Munich - Schwabing-West .
