A skate night or bladenight is a leisure and sporting event for inline skaters that takes place in many large cities under different names. It is usually held several times during the summer months. The participants drive a longer route or a circuit on paths officially cordoned off by the police.

The conditions for participating in a skate night vary from place to place. In many cities, protective equipment (e.g. helmet) is mandatory. The target group is also often different. Some organizers are only aimed at advanced skaters, others also at beginners. This not only has different effects on the terrain and length of the route, but also results in a very different number of participants. In some cities the races take place with a few hundred, in others with thousands of participants. Skate nights are held either by the municipalities or by sports clubs . The offers are also increasingly coming from private organizers. These - but also other organizers - charge low participation fees in some cases.

Although the name “Skatenight” suggests an event in the evening or in at least partial darkness, this is not the case everywhere. In some cities, the journey is planned so that it ends before dark.

Munich

The Dresden night skating on May 8, 1998 was, according to the association, the first event of its kind in Germany. The Munich “Blade Night”, which was canceled due to financial problems in 2017, was “Europe's largest night skate event” in 2016 with around 50,000 participants on nine evenings.

In 1999 the first night skating in Austria started in Vienna. In Graz the Wednesday touring skate is skated in daylight. On Fridays, “city skating” takes place as a licensed sporting event, police on motorbikes cordon off the major intersections at flashing yellow traffic lights , around a dozen volunteer inline guides watch over the holding of the barriers and the cohesion of the participants. A distance of 15 to 20 km with typically 2 breaks is driven in around 1.5 hours. In 2019, the start time will be brought forward for the first time from 7:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in order to avoid twilight in the peripheral months.

In the course of the corona pandemic , state regulations on spatial distancing and bans also apply to sports events in and after May 2020 . In mid-April the start of city skating in Graz was announced for July instead of May, later postponed to mid-August and ultimately canceled entirely. In Berlin, the May appointment was canceled. Similar postponements - the start of the year - and cancellations can also be expected for other event locations, whereby a larger expected number of participants is a stronger argument against holding an event.

History and law in Germany

The original purpose of many events in the late 1990s was a demonstration . The skaters fought for their rights as independent road users . Since April 2009, however, the StVO has stipulated that skaters have to be considered pedestrians . In the meantime, skate nights are generally considered a sporting event . In addition, there are also some events where groups of skaters are unofficially out and about, for example in Düsseldorf, Mainz or Berlin.

Skate nights in Austria

The skating nights in Austria have their origins in Friday Night Skating in Vienna - since 1999 - and Cityskating Graz - since 2001. The Viennese event has always included cycling as a traffic theme.

The origins are in Graz with Wednesday skate aka touring skate from 1995. For several years it has followed indoor training in winter (around November to March) and rolls typically 15-25 km from the city park fountain from April at 6pm, in high summer at 7pm Route along the Mur, the Mariatrosterbach to or a piece into the Peterstal in a rather small group but on routes that are demanding due to descents.

Cityskating Graz began as an informal Friday skate in the year 2000, accompanied by a private car and secured at intersections by guides driving ahead. Cityskating has been a licensed sporting event in Graz since 2001, sometimes with free rental of skates and protective equipment. Until 2016, the beginning and end of the Tummelplatz on the south-eastern edge of the old town center, where the city of Graz collected a fee from the "sporting event" for the use of the space for "non-traffic purposes".

Cityskating in Graz (canceled in 2020 due to Corona) starts on Fridays at 7 p.m. (until 2018: 7.30 p.m.), since 2017 from the private parking lot of the OBI hardware store in Conrad-von-Hötzendorf-Straße 103a, only inline skaters (without sticks) are open and is driven - typically just under 20 km - only when the road surface is likely to be dry and mostly in daylight. In 2015–2017 and 2019 there were 15 tour dates each May – August, 6 routes were planned twice each. In 2020, the year of the Corona crisis , the start was postponed first to mid-July, then mid-August and finally not approved by the authorities and therefore canceled completely. In 2015 a Friday was skipped because of a planned city festival that was canceled because of the rampage in Graz . Go-inline graz offers rental skates from time to time. The sporting event pays fees for police escort (usually 2 motorcycles, often plus 1 minibus) and an ambulance vehicle, which are raised through acquired grants and sponsors. At the end of the 2016 season, donations were collected at the playground for the first time to cover the costs. A team of volunteer guides in safety vests secures the route. Here, too, the road (halves) is kept clear of other traffic and the pavement is left free. On May 6, 2016, a two-wheeled cargo bike drove with music for the first time. Once a year on Car-Free Day (September 22nd) as a skater bunch after the cyclists of the Tour de Graz (organized by the city's traffic planning department) over a stretch of the motorway. There have already been tours through the underground route (otherwise forbidden for non-motorized people) of the North Spange (east of the Calvary Belt). Since 2017, the underground route of the South Belt (under the Puntigamerstraße) has been on the tour schedule. The Graz City Skating can be combined once a month with the Critical Mass bike ride , which starts all year round on the last Friday of the month at 5 p.m. at Südtirolerplatz.

In Vienna - due to the corona 2020 break - the event will take place from May to September, but not for the Danube Island Festival (2016: June 24) - 21 times (2015, 2016) on Fridays at 9 p.m. from Heldenplatz, inline skaters and cyclists together. Police cars with flashing lights block the route, which is then secured by volunteer activists as rolling guards (on skates with safety vests and light sticks). The formal handling as a demonstration for gentle mobility saves the event costs. A small box van from the Greens is filled with music. In recent years it has emerged that participants play music from their backpacks via web radio, smartphones and bluetooth speakers and that some decorate themselves, skate wheels and bicycles with LED light effects. Even when the road surface is wet, there is a high proportion of cyclists, a different tour every week, and once a year a piece of the motorway ( north bridge ). The length of the route is around 25 km, and people wait together at several breaks. Can be combined once a month with the Critical Mass bike ride on the 3rd Friday at 5 p.m. (+) from Schwarzenberg- to Heldenplatz. On May 20, 2016 as Ride for President, Friday Nightskating votes for Van der Bellen. From 2019 e-scooters will be strictly excluded from participation, as they "accelerate far too quickly" and thus endanger other participants - "We only demonstrate with muscle power."

Historical

  • The newly constructed 2nd tube of the 10 km long Plabutsch tunnel in Graz was driven back and forth by 25 cyclists and 25 skaters on January 25, 2004 - shortly before it was opened to traffic. Bright lighting, walls and lanes, different colored light markings - such as red light-emitting diodes on the sidewalk edge, the hall of the tunnel, calm and a pleasant temperature in the middle of 10 ° C offered a contrast to the cold and the gravel on the streets outside.
  • On April 12, 2017, the (second) Graz Wednesday skate (around 12 skaters) drove through the underground route of the southern belt with the smell of fresh lane markings , which was handed over to car traffic in the following month and has been on the city skating and Tour de Graz route plan repeatedly since 2017.

Skate nights in Switzerland

The skate nights in Switzerland have their origins in Monday Night Skate, which emerged in the late 1990s and which paved the way in almost all cities. In the meantime, some of them have split off from the parent club and now run the inline nights in Swiss cities as independent clubs. However, since 2012 the number of participants has been falling for all trips.

Today the following skate nights are held in Switzerland in the spring and summer months:

place frequency ⌀ Number of participants Surname
Aarau every 3 weeks 300 Monday Night Skate Aarau

Other countries

Europe

In Amsterdam they meet all year round - if dry - at 8:15 pm / 8:30 pm in the Vondelpark at the Filmmuseum for Friday Night Skate Amsterdam for a two-hour round on various routes (22-25 km), mostly "without a picnic". From 1997 onwards, groups of skaters began to cooperate, starting regular tours from Vondelpark. September 1998 the number of participants reached almost 500. October 1998 the foundation "Skate!" set up, which in 1999 received the honor of "Amsterdam of the Year" from the mayor. On September 3, 1999, the record number of 3000 skaters took part. A pushed three-wheeled stroller plays music.

The Friday Night Skate Copenhagen - for the first time in September 1999 - rolls in 2016 from the end of April to the end of September every 14 days and comes with 12 rides that start at 8:00 p.m. As in Amsterdam, the volunteers who carry out the necessary roadblocks have "blockers" on their bright yellow safety vests. Police on motorbikes drive ahead. The organization writes from 500–1500 participants. Flying Nurses / Doctors among the skaters have plasters for the fallen. Friday Night Skate is seen as a global project.

The weekly London Friday Night Skate for "inline" and "quad skaters" - "weather permitting" - starting at 8:00 p.m. from Hyde Park Corner will stop at red traffic lights and start when green. Police cannot be seen accompanying them. In addition, a cozy "Sunday Stroll" is rolled out on Sundays at 14:00. Street hockey players started the "Betty Blade", named after a sponsor, based on the Paris model in 2000, which was only ridden 6 miles on sidewalks and bike paths by typically 50 skaters. A 2001 the LondonSkate was put on the road due to the increasing number of participants. The second skate in 2002 had 800 participants. In 2002 and 2003 musical accompaniment from a bicycle was added. In 2004 there was a bigger launch party and lessons for beginners. 2005 ended with a London Santa Skate with 200 disguised people. In 2006 the sound system was supplemented by radio links to repeaters on skaters. The financing takes place z. B. Via the sale of T-shirts, participation is free.

In Paris , inline skaters meet in September 1993. Pari Roller meets when the road is dry, all year round weekly at 9:30 p.m. at Place Raoul Dautry, not far from Gare Montparnass, the 3-hour tour runs from 10:00 p.m. to 01:00 drove. The organizer asks for an annual fee of € 25. - Nightskates take place in Nancy , an almost circular course 19 km long and 300 m in altitude is documented on the web.

America

In Los Angeles , if dry, they drive all year round. At 8:30 p.m. everyone meets for the - free - LA Friday Night Skate, 4 routes are rolled 16 km from 9:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. by typically 40–80 skaters. Skate goes back to the example in San Francisco and was started by the Venice Beach Skate Dancers , which is why music - from a 12 kg backpack - and dance also play an important role today. There are themed tours on Independence Day, in October against violence and hatred and on Halloween .

In New York City , all year round, every Tuesday (since 1990 or 1991) from Central Park typically 32–40 km is skated. Night skates that start at 8 p.m. are also available on Mondays and Wednesdays, but not during the cold season. On Thursdays there is an evening skate that starts at 19:15. Once a month on Fridays there is a Central Park Moonlight Skate with cyclists starting at 10 p.m. On Halloween a 56 km Empire Skate runs to Sleepy Hollow. Sometimes volunteers with a small first aid kit in red T-shirts with a white cross accompany the tours. At the beginning of August there is a Big Apple Roll on Saturday afternoons .

In San Francisco they meet on Fridays at 8.30 p.m. and start at 9 p.m. with typically a few hundred participants on inline skates ("blades") and roller skates ("rollers"). The Midnight Rollers San Francisco's Friday Night Skate is organized by the California Outdoor Roller Sports Association (CORA), with David "D" Miles as a president who is committed to since 1980 for skating. After the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989 , the damaged two-story Embarcadero Freeway, which was closed to traffic, was used for skating until it was demolished in 1991, punished by the Highway Patrol . Only then was the meeting held on Friday. Another route was found along the Embarcadero Waterfront . By 1993 the number of participants increased to 200. When two newspapers reported several times, the number of participants doubled and reached a maximum of over 700 in 1996. During breaks there is also dancing. Rules are used to achieve security and try to avoid conflicts with the police.

Since the blockers / guides always have to stop to secure on cross streets, they then have to drive up to the left again at a higher speed than the crowd. If, contrary to the rules, participants do not keep at least one meter free on the left for this overtaking maneuver, guides arriving from behind sometimes use a whistle to claim this space.
