Stefan Zimmermann (born March 18, 1950 in Cologne ) is a German lawyer and notary .

Life

Zimmermann studied law in Cologne and was a university assistant at the University of Cologne from 1976 to 1978. In 1978 he was promoted to Dr. jur. obtained his doctorate and entered the notarial assistant service in the same year. Zimmermann has been a notary in Cologne since 1985. In 2012 he was appointed honorary professor at the law faculty of the University of Cologne.

From 1979 to 1985 he was managing director of the Federal Chamber of Notaries . From 1988 to 2006 he was chairman of the Rheinischer Notarverein, whose honorary chairman he has been since 2006. From 1991 to 2007 he was also President of the German Notaries' Association, which he helped found; since 2007 he has been Honorary President of the German Notaries' Association. He is also chairman of the notary insurance fund as well as a member of the IRZ Foundation German Foundation for International Legal Cooperation and the board of trustees of the International Institute of the University of Nizhni Novgorod , advisory board of the German Notary Publishing House , of the Institute for Notary Law of the Humboldt University in Berlin. and the Cologne Legal Society. He is also a lecturer at the University of Cologne. In 2013 he was appointed a full member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts , Salzburg, which appointed him a member of its Senate in 2015. In 2017 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Technology, Management and Economics of St Petersburg.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, Zimmermann played a key role in the development of the notarial constitution in the new federal states as chairman of the Rheinischer Notarverein. In the competition between the two notarial structures of the legal notary and the notary (see notary ), he advocated the introduction of the notary in the new federal states. The ground for this was prepared in the meetings of the GDR Council of Ministers on June 20, 1990 and the People's Chamber of the GDR on September 12, 1990.

Zimmermann is a holder of the Great Medal of Honor of the Republic of Austria and the Order of Merit of the Notaries of Estonia and Ukraine. In 2010 he was awarded the Order of Merit of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia for his services to the establishment of a democratic legal and notarial system in the Eastern European countries and his commitment to the non-profit Johannes Seniorendienste eV. In 1996 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon ; In 2015 he received the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class.
