Stefan von Holtzbrinck (born May 15, 1963 in Ettlingen ) is a German lawyer and publisher. He is (until her death on October 17, 2019 together with his half-sister Monika Schoeller ) a partner in the Georg von Holtzbrinck publishing group founded by his father Georg von Holtzbrinck and has been the chairman of the management board since May 2001.

Life

Stefan von Holtzbrinck studied law and German at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen and the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . He did his doctorate with Peter Lerche in Munich on the allocation of cable frequencies.

From 1990 to 1992 Stefan von Holtzbrinck worked as an assistant to the management of the Kirch Group in Munich. From 1992 to 1996 he built up the new media division of the Georg von Holtzbrinck publishing group in Munich and acted as managing director of Systhema Verlag. From 1997 to 2000 he worked as Director Electronic Publishing and Managing Director of the Nature Publishing Group , an international science publisher for biology , medicine and physics , which publishes, among other things, the journal Nature . The Nature Publishing Group is a subsidiary of Macmillan Limited in London , which in turn has been part of the Georg von Holtzbrinck publishing group since 1999. Most recently, Stefan von Holtzbrinck was Director of Macmillan Limited.

In May 2001 he took over the management of the Georg von Holtzbrinck publishing group from his half-brother Georg-Dieter von Holtzbrinck, who was 22 years his senior . Stefan von Holtzbrinck and his half-sister Monika Schoeller have each held 50% of the shares in the Georg von Holtzbrinck publishing group since Georg-Dieter von Holtzbrinck retired in mid-2006. In mid-March 2007 Michael Grabner left the management team at Holtzbrinck after more than 15 years. Stefan von Holtzbrinck then also took over the chairmanship of the newspapers division and the chairmanship of the supervisory board of the Handelsblatt publishing group (trading as the Handelsblatt Media Group since 2018). Holtzbrinck's controversial decision to dismiss Barbara Laugwitz as the publisher of Rowohlt Verlag in order to replace her with Florian Illies in 2019 , which also met with criticism from well-known authors of the publisher, met with a negative public response after he quit only a year later.

Stefan von Holtzbrinck is Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Max Planck Foundation for the Promotion of the Max Planck Society , Chairman of the Board of Trustees “Child-friendly Stuttgart” and a member of the Board of Directors of the Stuttgart Community Foundation. Since 2008 he has also been a member of the Board of Directors of the Max Planck Society.
