Stegaspis is a genus of humpback chirps of which only two species have been described: Stegaspis fronditia and S. bracteata . The two species occur in northern South America and southern Central America . There are a number of synonyms for both types.
features
In Stegaspis fronditia is a clear sexual dimorphism, the female has a more or less L-shaped pronotum with a blunt-ended large extension over the head, the male has a round pronotum. In S. bracteata the pronotum is the same in males and females, roughly triangular, almost straight at the front. The pronotum is finely dotted and hairy. The species are 5.6 to 7.7 mm long, yellowish, reddish brown or dark brown. The animals are probably camouflaged as a dry leaf by the shape and color of their pronotum.
Way of life
Mostly these humpback chirps occur individually, but sometimes small groups of adult animals with larvae have also been observed. Sometimes the stegaspis cicadas appear together with ants, acoustic signals have also been described.
