The Steglitz Museum , also known as the Steglitz local history museum , is a museum in Berlin that deals exclusively with the history and society of the Berlin districts of Steglitz , Lankwitz and Lichterfelde . It is located in a listed Wilhelminian style house built between 1902 and 1903 on Drakestrasse in Lichterfelde-West .

history

After the founding of Greater Berlin in 1920 and the incorporation of Steglitz into the newly created city, concern grew that historical and regional peculiarities of the formerly independent place could be lost. For this reason, an archive was set up as early as the beginning of the 1920s and realities were collected that were supposed to document the past and present of Steglitz. The history of technology and the development of the migratory bird movement are the exhibition and research topics of the house. In addition to documenting tradition, it is also about showing the outstanding influence of the Steglitz community from a global perspective.

After several changes of location, the current museum location was moved in 1978. The operator is the Heimatverein Steglitz eV, founded in 1923, an institution in the district that is funded from the district's cultural resources.

collection

Today the collection includes historical exhibits of different categories, a specialist library, a comprehensive photo collection and an archive. The collections continue to grow through acquisitions and especially donations.

Exhibitions

The museum occupies an entire floor in the house at Drakestrasse 64a. The rooms are each dedicated to different topics such as home decor or military history. The staging of the exhibits, which barely allows the museum to be separated from a collector's apartment, is particularly criticized by trade visitors. The association is therefore planning to redesign the exhibition in the medium term in line with contemporary museum standards.

research

The museum makes important contributions to research and teaching through its archive, which is unique in its specific profile. Apart from schoolchildren and students who regularly do internships in the museum, the house also provides workplaces and materials for researchers from different faculties. In addition to its own publications, the museum regularly becomes the basis for theses and dissertations, especially in the subjects of history, political science and art history.
