Kleonai Quarry

The quarry of Kleonai is a quarry of the ancient city of Kleonai and is located on the Greek highway 7 at the rest area at kilometer 105.5 between Corinth and Argos just before the highway exit "Ancient Nemea" (Αρχαία Νεμέα).

The quarry has an extension of about 100 × 40 m and is located on the southeast side of the Drymoni mountain (Δρυμώνι) in the district "Patima", which belongs to the village of Agios Vasilios . It is sedimentary limestone with a small amount of marl . During the excavations of the 3rd ephoria , twelve Sikyan coins were found. Based on this and the pottery found, the quarry can be traced back to the 5th to 3rd century BC. To be dated. The type of mining, such as the tool marks and the way in which the blocks were removed, also support this dating.

The broken stones were partly used to build the sanctuary of Nemea . Some blocks were left in the quarry. It is believed that these were of poor quality and were therefore not used.
