The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it on September 23, 1960 after the German optician and entrepreneur Hugo Adolph Steinheil (1832-1893), who in 1866 independently of the German-British optician John Henry Dallmeyer (1830-1983) an Aplanaten and 1891 one Had developed a telephoto lens .
