A rock fill is a heaped up layer of rubble stones . In hydraulic engineering , it is used to fortify the banks of rivers and canals , the bed of the river or the construction of groynes or longitudinal works . It is also used as bulk material in the construction of dams .

Boulders can also be used to protect bridge piers or lighthouses. The stone size is determined in such a way that the bed can offer sufficient resistance to the attacking water masses.

If necessary, the load-bearing capacity of the subsoil can be increased with a rock fill .
