Stilt roots are formed by different (usually tropical ) tree species . They arise from the above-ground part of the tree trunk and grow towards the substrate , where they develop an underground root system. Like buttress roots, stilt roots have a supporting function.

Mangrove trees of the genus Rhizophora have impressive stilt roots, but stilt roots are also found in terrestrial trees, e.g. B. in the palm family (Arecaceae), in the mulberry family (Moraceae) or in the annone family (Annonaceae).
