Way of life

The reddish brown billy goat can be found on the flowers of umbellifers such as yarrow or wild carrot in warmer locations from May to August . The larvae develop in dead branches of deciduous trees such as black locust , walnut and oak . The females lay the eggs one by one in cracks in dead trees so that the larvae can eat their own passages in the wood independently of one another. The development lasts until autumn. In spring, the larva pupates in the wood. Various parasitic wasps species as Xorides fuligator , Dolichomitus mesocentrus or Coleocentrus excitator can parasitize the larvae.
