Stenus ampliventris is a beetle from the family of the short-winged (Staphylinidae).

features

The beetles reach a body length of 3 to 4 millimeters. The wings , the legs and the rest of the body of the animals are colored black. Only the first link of the jaw probe is light, the rest are always black. The puncture of the wing is always separated. A weak microstructuring can be seen between the individual points.

The species is very similar to a number of other European Stenus species. An important distinguishing feature is the dense, but not wrinkled (wrinkled) puncturing on the upper side.

Occurrence and way of life

The animals occur in the Palearctic , it is considered a West Siberian taiga species with relict occurrences as far as southern and central Europe. The northern distribution extends to the Arctic Circle. The species is very rare in Central and Southern Europe. The animals colonize bogs and swamps and live there near sedge bulbs , in which they overwinter. In Germany, only two occurrences from Brandenburg ( Schorfheide and Dahme-Seen-Area) are currently known. The species is classified as an Ice Age relic species due to its attachment to moors.

Taxonomy

The species was first described by the Finnish entomologist Johan Reinhold (John) Sahlberg after specimens from a swamp area near Helsinki. The Stenus wagneri L. Benick , found in Brandenburg in 1917, is synonymous with it, as the coleopterologist Volker Puthz found out in 1991, and only then was the species detected for the first time in Germany.
