Stephan Heilen (born May 1965 in Kleve ) is a German classical philologist .

Life

Stephan Heilen studied classical philology and Italian at the Università per gli Stranieri in Perugia , from 1986 to 1990 he studied at the University of Münster . During his from the DAAD -funded study in Florence (1990-1991), he specialized in Giancarlo Savino on Handschriftenkunde and Manfredo Manfredi on Papyrology . He returned to Münster in 1991, where he passed the state examination in Latin and Greek in 1993 and in Italian in 1994. In 1998 he received his doctorate “summa cum laude” from Wolfgang Hübner .

From 1996 to 1999 Heilen was a member of the graduate school "Greek and Byzantine Textual Tradition - History of Science - Research on Humanism and Neo-Latin". From 1999 to 2006 he was a research assistant in Münster. After completing his habilitation on July 10, 2006, he went to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as an assistant professor in August 2006 . In September 2009 he accepted a professorship for Classical Philology with a focus on Latin / Neo-Latin from the University of Osnabrück .

Heilen's research work focuses on the history of astrology in the context of Greco-Roman antiquity and the Renaissance, on the other hand he also researches neo-Latin poetry, especially didactic poetry .
