Stephan Helmut Immanuel Kessler (born April 26, 1966 in Krefeld ) is a German Balticist and the third professor for Baltic studies at the chair of the same name at the University of Greifswald .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1985 in Xanten , Kessler studied mainly Baltic, Slavonic and philosophy in Constance and Münster from 1987 to 1994 . He then obtained his doctorate in 1998 at the University of Münster on the subject of storytelling techniques and the distribution of information in Vasilij Aksenov's "Ožog", "Zolotaja naša železka" and "Poiski žanra" . In 2004 he completed his habilitation at the University of Greifswald; the habilitation thesis, which appeared in Wiesbaden in 2005 , is entitled The Lithuanian Idylls. Comparative genre-theoretical study of texts from Poland and Lithuania, 1747–1825 . In 2008, Kessler was appointed to the professorship for Baltic studies in Greifswald.

Research priorities

Kessler's main research areas are linguistics : metaphor theories, sociolinguistics , historical sociolinguistics and pragmatics . In literary studies he works on the Latvian literature of the 17th and 20th centuries, on the Lithuanian literature of the 19th century and on the Baltic-Slavic literary relations. In addition, Kessler has supervised various text editions.
