Stephan Nitsch (born June 23, 1956 in Quedlinburg ; † August 9, 2008 in Langenhagen ) was a German engineer.

Life

Already in his youth he began to deal with the approaches that had led to the development of modern aviation. Following his military service, he studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Magdeburg . After the first replicas of Otto Lilienthal , he initially actively pursued the development of hang gliding (see hang glider ) and is considered one of the pioneers of this sport in the GDR . From willow rods, vacuum cleaner pipe and tent poles, he designed the "Lump" - a Rogallog ladder based on West German plans. After the border policy of the GDR had forbidden him any opportunity to practice this sport, he began to build historical aircraft in Anklamborn aviation pioneer for the Otto Lilienthal Museum .

After the political change in 1989, Stephan Nitsch turned to the now legal hang gliding sport and wrote a book (Vom Sprung zum Flug) about the replica of Lilienthal's flying machines and his students, and the technical history of the hang glider.

Stephan Nitsch lived with his wife in the Hanover area and worked as an engineer in the aviation industry.

He died of cancer.
